Your favourite 2021 album release

This isn't intended as an argument about whether Jedward's drums are mixed better than Mastadon's. Just what was your personal favourite album released in 2021.

For me, there's no competition, it has to be Fortitude by Gojira

It reminds me of Sepultura's Roots album, lots of South American influences showing through and incredible drumming. The overall sound is massive. Definitely one to play loud. Possibly my favourite metal album of the last decade.

What's your album of the year?

Hmm actually, I think this is the first year I've not bought a single new release. Last year I only bought Run The Jewels' fourth. I've listened to Fortitude several times online and while I applaud Gojira's environmental campaigning I find it patchy. IMO Magma is still their best by quite some margin, probably partly because of the clean vocals.

The only new thing I've bought in 2021 is more than a little bit niche.

Ms Tedstone Glover is a PHD music student who's spent the last 5 years researching and trying to recreate the music of the Roman age.

On the remote chance that anyone else is interested the album is available to buy on bandcamp but I think all the tracks are up on Youtube.

I'm astonished. That track sounds like a modern take on Appalachian hill music and which might have come off the soundtrack of a TV series about Kentucky crystal meth cookers.

Is meth like wine where you get different varieties in different regions?

I think it's been quite a good year for new music. Another favourite from this year is Distant Populations by Quicksand.

Thanks for reminding me about that, I've been meaning to check it out for ages and it's now on my list for tomorrow 🤜

I have as actually got a few from this year, although I discover from the the past too.

Going with my gut I’m going for Amyl and The Sniffers - Comfort To Me:

Another good choice, although the production isn't quite as raw sounding as their previous albums ,which is a shame imo.

My favourite so far has been Drool by Part Chimp. Going to see them in a few weeks too and I can't wait! Welfare Jazz by Viagra Boys is a close 2nd.

On the flip side, I was quite disappointed with Arrows by Red Fang. They're one of my favourite bands and it's not a bad album, but the production seems to have sucked all the low end out. Maybe it sounds better to guitarists.

I was disappointed by Arrows as well. It just seems a bit weak compared to Murder The Mountain and Only Ghosts

That's exactly what I thought, it's just lacking the oopmh that their previous albums have. It's a shame because Aaron's bass tone is pretty huge and always something I look forward to. On the plus side, they're still killing it with their videos!
