Si the OldGit played in a superb barn dance/ceilidh band called the Jellied Reels... I depped on bass with them one evening and Si played his saxes and didgeridu(!) all evening. Si knew perfectly well that I hate taking bass solos... so predictably, half way through one of the tunes he turned and pointed at me and with a massive grin yelled "BASS SOLO!!!".
Git.

That happened to me once and I simply stood there and played nothing. Passionate believer in not showing someone up on stage.

Shout back ‘interpretive dance!’ and wiggle about a bit. Works every time,

well. that one time I tried it, but it’s still a 100% record!

A 3 piece rock band i joined did that to me in middle of Crossroads and the singer/guitarist announced a bass solo and stopped playing. I had no choice but do something so i just played a few finger picking chords on Crossroads structure and strummed a few times and got a great round of applause at the end.

Have to say that was my scariest moment ever playing in bands.

I put together a nice walking line for Feeling Good.

It wouldn't be my first choice of song to improvise a solo to, but our BL was impressed by my line, so I didn't get a choice...

I know a very good bass player who plays in a funk and soul band, very much a 'pocket' player. Once, their singer called for a bass solo - a complete surprise. Bassist played one note a bar, looking straight at the singer all the time. Didn't happen again!
