I've been playing bass for nearly 3 years and I can tell you anything about basses, but I know pretty much nowt about cabs, amps and generally 'that' end of the equipment scale.

So as a nOOb to this kind of thing, can someone please tell me the difference between a preamp and a normal amp if there are any differences?

A "normal" amp will probably consist of a Preamp & a Power Amp in one box.

A preamp on its own doesn't have enough output to power the speakers - its built to take a low-level signal, alter its character with a bit of EQ, & make it big enough for...

the power amp, which on its own won't be able to do much with the weedy output from most pickups, but is ace at pumping watts into your cabinets.

What confuses some people is you can also have a pre-amp in your active bass and some people use DI boxes with tone controls (BDDI) that are also pre-amps. I've got 3 pre-amps running - one on the bass, one on the floor and one in my amp.

I had Mr Hellborg do a personal demo of his gear for me. Gotta say I rather liked it ;o) - Speaking of Ampeg.. I could be swayed by the SVT-8 .. now the spec of that looks good. I wonder if it sounds as good.
