I don't like it when someone says to turn a screw, knob, key or other rotational device to the right or left.

I always say clockwise or anticlockwise

I've always referred to them as the port and starboard pickups. Isn't that the standard?

Maybe upstream and downstream would clear up any confusion.

I’d say it was more of an aft/stern situation.
