According to Pino...

I saw NIN at the O2 when I was an invited guest backstage ... I was selling a bunch of vintage Hofners to Justin Meldal-Johnsen (introduction through @tayste_2000) and the planned meet at his West End hotel had fallen through. This was in 2009, an easy thing for me to check because the gig was just after Michael Jackson had died. They brought on special guest Gary Numan for a  pretty good rendition of Cars.

I wasn't a metal fan before that gig. Since then, I've utterly detested metal.

That version of Cars was excellent, we decided to do it in my classic rock band based on that version. Incredibly simple song to play, yet really good fun, especially if you have a keyboard player who nails the sound.

And strangely no fretless... Strange as it's what put his career on orbit.

I suspect Pino didn't have too much input. I think Cato is bang on.

It's basically just a list of a fairly random selection of basses that someone else has compiled with a couple of snippets from a Pino interview crowbarred into it.

Good point, but he's also pretty much responsible for the whole Precision Bass with flawounds resurgence, since D'Angelo's Voodoo album. Amongst younger players, Pino is probably more well known for that than his '80s fretless work.

In fact, here are all of Pino's contributions to the entire article. From that, they've just built an advertisement for a load of unit shifters which they can get a sales commission from. Shameless 😂

“Bass is the coolest instrument on the planet. You don’t have to jump around. You don’t have to do nothing. You can just stand there, play the bass, and hold it down. Maybe most people wouldn’t even be able to isolate what the bass is playing on a particular track. But as soon as it stops, they’ll know something’s wrong.”

“Keep it simple, get a P-Bass. The P-Bass just has one sound, with a tone control. And so many amazing records have been made with bass players playing on a P-Bass. You really can’t go wrong with that.”

“The fiesta red is always a color I really love and I love the feel of the neck on my ’61, which is just a different profile. So Fender put together those two instruments brilliantly and came out with the signature model.”

“For me, there’s nothing quite like locking with a great drummer, and just the sense of being a team player in that way. I think bass generally draws personalities that are drawn to being team players.”

So, it doesn't have just one sound then? It has just one volume control.... AND a tone control with lots of different variations possible, especially when combined with different playing techniques....
