baa
I ordered a kit from guitarkitfabric.co.uk. An Explorer style bass just because I like the looks of it. I work with vinyl and know nothing of paint, so I will wrap it. Sides and back in matte black and front in "black wood" For the price i'm not expecting much, but for the fun of assembling it, as a toy and a decoration it's worrh it to me.
Lfalex v1.1
Excellent. If the grain is a good as the body in the photo, just stain the front face instead and paint the back & sides. Or stain it all over.

Grahambythesea
Something a little more exotic than black would be fun if you’re vinyl wrapping. Gold or a more psychedelic pattern would cool!

None, none more black. 😂🤘

Lovely stuff, really keen to see how it turns out. I love the Explorer shape and really want to get one, just to take to blues jams. That or a flying V 😃

In my bass collection a black bass IS exotic 😀 A friend has a guitar with that look, and I think it will look cool on the Explorer.
baa
I think the black vinyl looks good now thats it's done. I promised myself that this time I wouldn't do it on the kitchen table, but at work where light, work area and tools are better. I ended up doing it on the dining room table, so it's not perfect, but good enough. 🙃 8

How does the bass sound now it's done?
Jean-Luc Pickguard
Very 80s - I used to have an MFI bookcase with a similar black woodgrain finish

In my opinion the 80s was the best era for basses. And music.

How does the bass sound now it's done? I forgot to install the grounding to the bridge, so right now it is buzzing very much. But other than that it sounds pretty good. Not the best in the world, but I could gig with it.
Bassfinger
I noticed they do a R**********r style bass as well. Might be an interesting diversion.
Stub Mandrel
Well done, looks good. Back in the 80s someone could have made a fortune selling black ash guitars 🙂 I wrapped my Hohner B2 in 'carbon fibre vinyl'. Shall we say it 'looks good from a distance'? Mind you it wasn't an expensive experiment, and reversible. I found so many tutorials online but noting that really explained how to do 'sharp corners' like those on your explorer. Any tips?

Thank you 🙂 The trick is to have enough vinyl "outside" of the guitar. So when you heat and pull it over the edges, you get all the wrinkles and stuff away from the body. i usually have 30-40 cm more on each side. Carbon, i think, is more difficult. I find it less easy to work with. I like that it's so easy to reverse, if you want to change color or just bring it back to original. I have done it to some of my Vantages. I did one in orange for a gig at a club for dutch people and removed it the day after. I wrapped one to hide holes from an experiment, and then wrapped my main to match.
