Jaw droppingly good albums for bass players to hear

On the whole, the albums with jaw-dropping bass playing skills I don't find hugely inspirational. Even thoughs that I like such as School Days, Heavy Weather and Hounds of Love.

The album which had me playing along more than any other (probably about once a week) in the 90s was this one, surprised the needle didn't come out the far side of the vinyl.

<EDIT> Actually it's SSSSH! I used to play along to all the time, the bass on Watt is a step up and often way past my skill level then, although I did work out Think About the Times which is one of my favourite walking lines. Any way, Leo Lyons is massively under-rated.

Also many albums with Dave Pegg on.

I always think that Robert Sledge doesn't get the credit he deserves. I love his playing, Ben Folds Five are probably one of my favourite bands.

He covers an awful lot of sonic space and anchors their work beautifully. And all with a pick and a fuzz box!

Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius,

Victor Wooten - A Show of hands,

Janek Gwizdala - Live at the 55 bar,

Snarky Puppy - Ground Up

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik,

Ben Folds Five - Whatever and ever amen,

Pearl Jam - Ten.

A recent album that has some really nice bass playing on it is:

Hayley Williams - Petals for armour. Joey Howard is a monster, he has a great pocket.

Anything by Uzeb or EST, but these are bands where the bass (Alain Caron) or double bass (Dan Berglund) is totally integrated in the composition process.

And those extraordinary albums :

Adfa by Jonas Hellborg,

Bass Time by Offground Tag,

Bestial Cluster by Mick Karn,

Discipline by King Crimson,

East West by Bill Frisell,

Hejira by Joni Mitchell,

Rebirth by Aka Moon,

Space Ritual by Hawkwind,

Trio in Tokyo by Michel Petrucciani,

Upper Extremities by Bruford Levin,

Voice by Hiromi,

We get Requests by The Oscar Peterson Trio.

And a lot more...

I haven't heard any of those before but after you've gone to all the trouble to put them in alphabetical order I feel obliged to make the effort. Well done sir!

I suspect many bassists of my generation learned from Lemmy's propulsive playing on Hawkwind's 'Space Ritual'

That’s what initially taught me to play. Cracking lines.

These days, still a bit of Hawkwind/Motorhead, anything by Yes, Renaissance, Genesis, Purple Mk 2 & 3, anything by Bow Wow Wow, Fleetwood Mac, Stranglers, ABBA, the first 3 Jamiroquai albums, Zero 7, Chic, the first Stanley Clarke album, anything featuring Jimmy Johnson, BSSM (Chilis - see Bow Wow Wow 😂), The Beatles, off the top of my head.

So- Peter Gabriel.

Nilsson Schmilsson- Harry Nilsson.

That part in the full length cut of Jump into the Fire where whoever's playing (Voorman or Flowers) detuned is crazy. Was it just detuned, or are they detuning it on the fly whilst playing?

Look Sharp (&) I'm the man- Joe Jackson.

I’m aware of both Om’s - one jazz (Cerberus) and the other metal. Like them both.

Just to confuse things further there is a great fusion outfit called Ohm - whose bass player has been influenced more than a bit by Percy Jones. The album is “Amino Acid Flashback”

Wow…. Some really great stuff already mentioned but I’ll add a few:

Joe Jackson’s first three albums for Graham Maby’s playing

Elvis Costello’s Attractions albums for Bruce Thomas (also BT’s playing on Suzanne Vega’s 99.9F Degrees)

Robyn Hitchcock’s albums with Andy Metcalfe and Matthew Seligman

Brian Eno’s Another Green World and Before And After Science for Percy Jones (PJ was a big influence on me)

All of Peter Gabriel’s albums for Tony Levin

Steel Pulse’s albums with Ronald “Stepper” McQueen

The Selecter for Charlie Anderson

Joni Mitchell Hijiera for Jaco

The Band’s first two albums (I really love Rick Danko’s playing on these)

REM’s first four records for Mike Mills’ wonderful melodicism

I could do this all day!!  And I haven’t even touched on my favorite jazz upright albums!

Deffo Graham Maby (I mentioned him, too)

Also like some of Bruce Thomas' work with Elvis Costello.

I do like a bit of Suzanne Vega, especially  99.9°F Didn't realise he played on that,  too.
