Who's gonna buy this?

This item popped up on my Ebay page earlier. Is there anybody in the whole wide world who'd be daft enough to bite on this? This one is in Japan, which seems to be the world centre for optimistic pricing these days, but I was in a guitar shop in Newcastle - good shop, loadsa stock, helpful staff, etc - a couple of months ago and they had a virtually identical CS model in stock @ 5K, which seemed ludicrous at the time. The relicing - and I know opinions vary about it but good quality ageing is for sure time consuming and difficult to pull off - was, well, fosters-poor, the fingerboard being particularly half-arsed, looking as it did like someone had just had random pokes at it with a Dremel.

Now I know some of you out there have collections of exotic basses costing many thousands - Wals, Alembics and other rarities, custom builds etc, not to mention actual vintage instruments, but this and other Fender-type instruments are none of those things, being, in effect, machine made production instruments with an element of hand finishing. The woods are pretty standard, though Fender (in this case) might select the nicer pieces for CS use, the hardware is completely standard, albeit aged, the tuners completely normal, the pickups just regular stock items. In fact the one I spotted in Newcastle didn't even have a bakelite scratchplate to lend some vintage cred. The one I tried weighed about 12lbs and had a neck so baseball-batty as to be borderline unplayable. I've played a few mk1 P's over the years and they weren't like that at all so you couldn't really put it down to historical accuracy.

I've kind of rambled on a bit here and maybe lost sight of the original point which is, I repeat, WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD PAY $10000 FOR A REPRO BASS?

Anyone? Contrary viewpoints welcome. I've been wrong before.

Seasons Greetings Y'all

Shug xx

Someone must buy these CS instruments or they wouldn't offer them. My guess is wealthy weekend warriors - lawyers, architects, IT specialists et al - who have money to burn. Many of them think nothing of dropping 100 grand on a car, after all, so 10 grand on a bass to impress their mates is almost small change. I'm glad such people exist. When they get bored with their shiny toys, sensible people like us can buy them for a fraction of what they paid for them.
