weezergeezer Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 For the eagled eyed and "Vintage " players among us will probably be able to spot this, as the younger players who never experienced the delights a cancer infested smokey pub /club /gig perhaps not.....no offence or discrimintion intended folks 🤐 note the dark mark near the tuning peg E string..what is it? headstock is a 1962 Jazz Quote
Doctor J Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 Some of the roadworn models sported it too, quite bizarrely. When the guitar solo goes on so long you can't even get back to your smoke, oh the humanity! 1 Quote
Chaddy Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 Blood from smacking the singer over the head whey they can barely carry a microphone into a venue due to the strain? 1 Quote
Steve Browning Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 Inexplicably, one of my basses has a small splodge of (what appears to be) blue Hammerite on the headstock. Quote
petebassist Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 I'd say you have a burning cigarette sitting in the curled end of the E or A string and it's scorched the headstock. Or you just slot your cigarette under the string just above the nut and when it burns down, voila! I do that all the time 😉 Quote
Dom in Dorset Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 Fag burn? Player stuffed his lit cigarette into the machine head only to find that the next song was a 10 minute prog rock anthem with no break long enough to remove it. Quote
Shaggy Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 (edited) I'm guessing J rather than P? Scorch mark from smokin' bass solo. Or a fag. Edit: may be an urban legend, but apparently when Eric Clapton took his Strat "Blackie" in for a set-up, the tech gave it a full clean, including removal of trademark burn on headstock. One totally p!ssed off guitar god..... Edited January 5, 2022 by Shaggy Quote
bass_dinger Posted January 5, 2022 Posted January 5, 2022 Someone in the audience tried to set fire to it, after hearing the introduction to Mustang Sally once too often? Quote
weezergeezer Posted January 6, 2022 Author Posted January 6, 2022 Well done you guys who sussed it was the cursed cigarette...not only bored bass players but guitarist too used this trick to on endless 12 bar blues solos etc. sorry no prizes this time as the cupboard is bear after Xmas..🤔 Quote
Intoutof Posted January 6, 2022 Posted January 6, 2022 Of course nowadays there are no burnt headstocks due to availability of velcro cigarette holders made by Gr@v G@@r. 1 Quote

WAYNESWORLD Posted January 6, 2022 Posted January 6, 2022 Could be woodbine /no6 or if the previous owner was posh Senior Service. Personally I was of the Wills Whiffs brigade with occasional ParkDrive. Thankfully I gave up years ago and and now am trying to kick the Gas habit which is proving more difficult. 1 Quote
leschirons Posted January 7, 2022 Posted January 7, 2022 I guess Clapton's Blackie Strat had the most famous fag burn. I knew two guitarists who deliberately did the same to their black Strats??? Ah, the good old days when you smoked on stage. I haven't smoked for 7 years now but still sort of miss the smokes and lighter on top of my amp under an elastic band so they didn't shake off and engineering enough of a pause between songs to get one lit😆 Quote
