FirstBass
Hi. I bought a 5 string modern player bass recently. It has a 4 position switch to give you pickup combinations. The pot was loose on the plate and has been spinning round... There is a black and white wire dangling near the switch connections. Does anybody have a wiring diagram of this model of bass please? Thanks. Jon.
Thunderbird
Should be white is hot and black ground I think there's a diagram on the seymour duncan website but I think it's white to the switch and black to the back of the pot Edited January 10, 2022 by Thunderbird
Woodinblack
There is a link here to the switching: https://www.talkbass.com/threads/need-help-fender-modern-player-jazz-v.1355552/
FirstBass
Thank you. I'd found that post, but for some reason the image wasn't showing Are the red marks on the positional switch jumper wires? I've soldered the wires back on and get no hum in positions 1+4 but a bit on 2+3 Am I to assume this is "normal" jazz behaviour? 😊
Woodinblack
Yes, the red wires are jumpers. the fender player had humbucker pickups, but in two positions, the humbuckers aren't on and they are single coils, so you will get a thinner sound with a bit more noise, a bit more like a traditional jazz. FirstBass
I know chances are slim, but does anyone have a modern player jazz that they'd be prepared to take a picture of for me? I need the 4 position swich so I can see the wires clearly The jpg that fender uk sent me is a bit grainy when I zoom into it. I'd be v appreciative
Woodinblack
did they not send a wiring diagram?
FirstBass
Yeah, but the switch area is grainy and vague. I've tried zooming it
Woodinblack
Well, if noone has one, or someone has but doesn't want to take it apart, post the picture here, maybe we can help.

Woodinblack
Apart from not great wiring, the top image (especially combined with the wiring diagram) is clear enough to work from. So there is a white, black, green and red wire from each pickup, which is normal for humbuckers (normal colours, but for extra fun each manufacturer uses the colours for different things), and a metal connector (which they don't - that goes to earth). What is actually missing on your plug - do you have the same colours used? Do you have a photo of how yours actually is?
Woodinblack
OK, I worked out what should be there and it makes sense. It gives you 1. front humbucker, back humbucker 2. front humbucker, back single 3. front single, back humbucker 4. front single, back single. I drew it out but it is not that neat! But here it is anyway if it helps
FirstBass
You sir, are a gent. Thank you for doing/checking that. The original seems to show red jumper wires. Would you agree?
Woodinblack
The original shows red lines which confused me (as they wouldn't make sense) then I realised they may just be showing the internal connections of the switch. If there are jumpers there it wouldn't work
Woodinblack
Oh I thought I would have a look what I had on the ipad to do diagrams, as I keep thinking it would be handy, so I did it for this diagram as a test!
