Mods to a Squier standard P5

Hello!

I find the neck profile, nut width and string spacing on these old Korean basses perfect for a 5 string. 
However the electrics and pups are underwhelming to my ears.

So am modding one (including a defret) I’ve recently acquired.

What say you, the BC massive? 
 

Pickups:
My favourite pups are Bartolinis, so likely to replace with some Barts. Will require some widening of cavities as I believe the factory pups are 4 string’ers.

 

Pre amp:
My initial thought was for a “drop in” P Retro, but I would need to add a blend pot or switch. 
 

Don’t want to spend a fortune, maybe £300 on the parts?
