BassAdder60
With my change over to using a leather strap fitted to my bass strap pin using a rubber washer to keep it in place I’ve wondered if the strap tight against the bass body may wear the finish ? Anyone had that ?
naxos10
Never noticed any on bases.
ped
No but it might squeak. I normally rough up the inside depending on the leather and bass in question.
Velarian
I think it depends on how heavily it’s used. Any strap has the potential to to cause wear over time. My only gigged bass (‘77 P bass) which has seen plenty of action looks like this:
chris_b
Use a straplock. My Dunlop straplocks hold the strap about 1/2" away from the body of the bass. Or else, if there's enough room, a felt washer between the strap and the bass might help.

Yep just ordered two sets of Dunlop strap locks, they look better 👍
casapete
I’ve used a leather strap secured by either Grolsch washers or Dunlop plastic Lok strap retainers for decades without any damage to my basses. ( Never once had the strap come loose either in case you’re wondering....) I know a lot of folk like the Dunlop Strap Locks but I’ve never liked them due to having to alter each bass and strap. Also I avoid any metal parts on straps generally as it’s just a recipe for a bass scratching disaster. 🤣
Old Horse Murphy
I went through a stage where I assiduously fitted Schaller strap locks to all my basses but for the last few years have reverted to Grolsch/home brew washers as well. I have never had an issue with them coming loose or being less secure, whereas the Schallers would work loose intermittently over time and often I found I had to butcher a good strap to get the locks to fit properly and securely. I actually used to find the extra distance the Schallers pushed the bass away from the strap was a bit disconcerting too. My only bass that has Schallers still is my 4003S as them come as standard on it and replacement strap buttons are not as easy (or cheap) to find due to the specific diameter of the screw used.

I leave the strap on and there is no chance of of the locks touching the bass let alone scratching it.
Grahambythesea
The only time I have ever dropped a bass was when it had Schiller strap locks. The fitting on the strap came undone. Prefer Grolsch rings now.
Supernaut
Grolsch straplocks for me. Nothing looks cooler than those with a vintage Levi's strap.
BassAdder60
Ok tried the Dunlop Strap locks and I didn’t care for them so … Put the Fender rubber washers on again, simple but it just works Edited February 10, 2022 by BassAdder27
DaytonaRik
I went for the DiMarzio clip locks ages ago and they are now on all my gigging basses. It's bolted to your guitar - it's not going anywhere!!!! https://www.dimarzio.com/straps/cliplock
