Same here. I found the cab sim took out too much top end so I am running the amp output into a Radial passive DI box. If I need to knock back the treble I tend to use the tweeter switch. And yes there is some hiss, but the tone is stellar. I’m using a Cali76 Compact into it so that if I dig in hard I can get a little bit of break-up. Next gig with this setup will be with Dire Streets at Bingley Little Theatre on 16 December. The whole thing fits neatly into a laptop bag.

Ha funny, I take mine into a Radial JDI. The Jensen transformer pairing, as you say similarly, sounds incredible. I played a gig through a Noble the other night (not mine sadly) and much preferred the 64 paired with my DI, although I’d be interested to have spent more time in comparing.
 

Just wish Origin had figured the cab sim thing at R&D.

Thread resurrection alert! (Seemed a better shout than starting a new one)

 

Any Bassrig users (either of the two) using this to go to FOH and running other effects into it? REALLY fancy one but past experience with IRs and my C4 aren't the best, but never used an analogue cab sim so not sure if will have the same effect 🤔

By way of an update I have replaced the Radial DI with a Fender Micro DI (or Mooer clone, I have both). It has a switchable 4x12 simulator which I use on a case-by-case basis depending on what sounds best with the particular bass I’m using at the time.

Only the compressor in the photo above. What effects are you planning to use? I can’t see  modulation or dynamics effects being a problem but I have had issues with drives into cab sims on skinny-string guitar.

It's mostly been solo'd octaves and saw wave synth stuff I've had issues with... they're essential to what we do though so can't be without 😔

The saw wave synth thing makes sense as you're adding a load of harmonics - kinda like distortion, only different.

I have the Super Vintage (the SVT one).  I’ve only used it outside my house to FOH once. That was with guitar and we were short of XLR cables, so I didn’t use the cab sim.  I have some recordings (via a DAW) where I use the cab sim , but I’m not sure which (if any) effects I had with it in most cases .  I do have a couple of guitar recordings where I used the cab sim and know what effects I was using (you have to listen to my dodgy guitar playing and singing though).  If you want me to share any videos (bass or guitar) let me know.

Morning lads. 

 

Going completely ampless from July when we head off on tour for our next shows. 

 

Currently putting together an iem rig (thanks to @EBS_freakfor his amazing thread and advice) and now looking to get the 'ampless' part. 

 

Anyone doing similar i.e going straight to FOH/ears using one of these? 

 

I've seen some use other DIs and Darkglass Elements etc but ideally id like a really simple setup of tuner>preamp(DI) >FOH as my originals band is pretty one dimensional in terms of the tone I need and I'll just need to set and forget. 

 

I've had the VT Bass in the past I've loved (when going through a non SVT) and an actual SVT Skunkworks head through a Berg 4x12 but unfortunately our days of big festival stages and >600 cap venues are over plus who can be f***ed lugging big rigs about in their 40s without a road crew. I've also heard great things from the line 6 Helix online for bass. 

 

Would love to hear the experiences of those using the super vintage or the '64 playing on iems.

My experience below, plus a shameless plug as I do actually have my 64 Black Panel up for sale here. 
 

On the Black Panel, it’s great on IEMs but of course it depends on what you’re after. I’m going for more of a late 60s / early 70s sound for the most part. It has a really lovely natural compression and is probably the best I’ve heard at emulating a proper old valve amp. Through the DI you get the 15 inch speaker emulation, through the 1/4” out you don’t, and so just the Bassman / Showman amp head. The latter means you don’t get the benefit of the DI signal but I got round this frequently by running mine into a Radial DI. You do introduce a bit of noise into your signal going out the 1/4” alone. 
 

The tone stack is a Fender style, not one you can spend ages dialling in as it’s fairly rudimentary but it does it so well. The Bassman side has more of a mid character, the Showman channel is more naturally scooped sounding. 
 

I’ve not actually yet played the Super Vintage but I would really love to.

I’m only playing the Black Panel out of the 1/4” out into a headphone amp (sometimes) with a cab sim. It’s really reactive to dynamics and has that lovely squishy feel that some tube amps have. Really makes the strings feel alive and responsive.
 

Caveat: I’m fairly new to the whole tube thing so will defer to others with more experience. However, I’ve got this and the SV next to some really nice tube DIs (Shift Line Olympic & Flex and a Sushi Box Grand Slampegg) and it holds its own admirably. It’s closest in sound and feel to the Olympic (which has a Fender tone stack). (The SV feels closer to the Flex.)

 

Even despite having the tube preamps, the Black Panel is a keeper for me as I really does seem to capture the sound and feel whilst eliminating the possibility of tube failure. It even saw off the JF Capo (for the type of sounds I like).

I do this.

 

I've used both the black panel and the super vintage. For me, the black panel is a better choice (we're Americana/Folk/Country or whatever) but the super vintage was very good as well.

 

If you're touring with your own desk/engineer, it's a piece of cake and so easy to soundcheck. If you're going to venues where the desk and engineer are new to the band, it's a bit more complicated getting through soundcheck and it's sometimes a compromise (depending on the capabilities of the engineer and desk).

We'll have our own desk, probably will just use the house mics apart from we'll supply out own vocal mics to keep that consistent. Bigger shows we'll have our own engineer as well but only FOH. 

 

I have stupidly been researching the Fake Plastic Trees by Audio Kitchen and now I'm thinking of getting one of those and The Small Trees Di 🤣

@charlietuna raves about the FPT and it sounds like you don’t even necessarily need to put a tube after it for it to sound great (though presumably your need for it might be for the DI more than anything).
