Odd CD pricing

I realise that some classic vinyl and I suppose some rarer CDs have a collector value, but I stumbled across one the other day that seems very odd , mainly because I have this CD!

now it’s not that I am desperate to cash in on this, it’s just seems odd that a CD I bought off the merch table at their gig would be capable of fetching that sort of money, actually it seems totally bizarre.

Any ideas about this?

No idea, to be honest I’ve never heard of them.

You see some strange prices sometimes on Discogs marketplace too.

By way of observation (as I'm always on the lookout for rare stuff), I'm staggered how much some of the XTC boxsets (Transistor Blast and Coat Of Many Cupboards) and Andy Partridge Fuzzy Warbles go for.  Also post Seeds Of Love Tears For Fears stuff on CD seems to be quite expensive too.

On the subject of Tears For Fears, I have two limited SDE editions of The Tipping Point coming (three bonus tracks on the CD and the Steven Wilson 5.1 BluRay version - 2,000 copies), these are already on eBay - even though it's not out until tomorrow.  One of the blurays sold for £170.00, the CD has plenty sold at £70+ a pop.

There was a fairly famous case in 2011 where an algorithm designed to keep a book competitively priced ended up pushing the price eyewateringly high.

https://www.wired.com/2011/04/amazon-flies-24-million/

While I was looking for that link I also found this

https://www.forbes.com/sites/barrycollins/2020/12/16/beware-of-this-amazon-scam-cds-selling-for-thousands-of-dollars/?sh=550eb8401cd5

For what it's worth I don't believe it's a scam or money laundering as suggested in the Forbes article, apart from anything else the affected CDs mentioned in the article are pretty niche and unlikely to sell that many copies even at a normal price.

The algorithm thing seems the most likely culprit.
