Bay Splayer
I've just purchased a Sansamp VT bass deluxe and noticed it runs on phantom power. Would it run off of my amp xlr or does it have to be a mixing desk? Amp is TC ELECTRONIC thrust BQ500 with balanced xlr out. Thanks in advance 👍
MichaelDean
Unfortunately not. Your amp won't supply phantom power. Plus the XLR on your amp and the XLR on the Sansamp are both outputs, it'd be like plugging both ends of a jack cable to two basses: nothing would happen. Generally speaking, it's pretty much just mixing desks and audio interfaces that can supply phantom power.

Mickyk
Phantom power is used to power Microphones in general,Phantom Power is a term given to the process of delivering DC (Direct Current) to microphones requiring electric power to drive active circuitry. Condenser microphones such as Shure's KSM range all have active circuitry and require phantom power.
itu
There are other electronic devices, too, that run on Phantom power: preamps, DI-boxes... It is a power supply that is usually around 9 - 52 VDC (tolerances included), and few milliamperes. P48 is very common. Electret condensers are usually fed with less voltage, like from 1.5 to 12 VDC. Dan Dare
You can buy a standalone PP supply. Most provide 48v. If your Sansamp needs that, you'll have plenty of choice.
pbasspecial
The Sansamp runs on either 9v battery, regular PSU or phantom power. Pretty versatile bit of kit. I have the 3 button programmable version 👍

My SWR amp (Spellbinder) does as it’s designed to provide phantom power over XLR (in case you want to mic your upright). No idea however whether a phantom powered preamp would work. But in any case it is exceedingly rare on amps nowadays.
Suburban Man
Phantom power boxes are fairly easy to come by on ebay if you don't want to have to use batteries. Its just like using an external PSU - but a bit neater. One like this : ARTcessories Phantom III is up for sale at the moment
pbasspecial
This doesn’t need a phantom power box/supply. A regular 9v psu works fine. The OP was just asking about taking phantom power from the mixing desk. The answer as it always is, is: depends. Depends on the mixing desk. Does it have PP or is it just a basic PA system with line and mic inputs only. Personally not worth the risk on relying on other people. Mine has a battery in and a PSU. Just to be doubly sure. Maybe it would be more accurate to say that XLR inputs are most likely able to supply phantom power.

Electrets generally run on batteries as the voltages are so low, stuffing 48v up them can have hilarious consequences.
