It was indeed co-designed with the company that BMW also use, and yes the first Bongo basses were offered in colours that referred to those offered by BMW at the time. ( To be fair, over the years I've had a fair few basses that seemed to have been co-designed with whoever came up with the Austin Allegro, but that's a whole other story...😟)

Eldon Tyrell
Next year is the Bongo's 20th anniversary. Let's see if EBMM release an anniversary model and/or use this opportunity to present a new version (like they did in 2018 for the Stingray, now Stingray Special).

horrorshowbass
Thanks for the vids @AndyTravis It definitely has the Stingray flavour for slapping (so much fun) and looks a super versatile instrument. Time to start saving

For one reason or another, most of my basses are put away in storage at the moment. I love Bongo basses though, and the day will come when I get back into playing mine. Just knowing I've got it to use when I want to is enough for me. At the moment I've got my trusty Harley Benton Shorty that I use to practice on and keep my chops up and a Status Graphite bass close to hand to reassure myself I can still play a long scale bass when my anxiety gets the better of me. I'm much more focused on my developing my playing nowadays than the gear, if that doesn't sound too pretentious (it probably does). I'm only playing at home for my own amusement nowadays, so I could break out a custom Alembic to play and nobody would know but me.
AndyTravis
I actually realised I need to play more rather than talking about it all and buying everything. I think the band having a few weeks off has meant I’m not playing as much too. Hopefully that changes next week

In case you are interested, that finish is inspired by a colour used on vintage American muscle cars in the 1960s/1970s that is much sought after by collectors nowadays. The Dodge Challenger driven by the Dukes of Hazard is probably the most famous example of a tangerine muscle car. That colour used on your Bongo isn't identical- it uses the modern pearledcent paint that is on some American cars nowadays- but it is a reference to those old cars, nevertheless. Thanks Misdee, I wouldn't mind one of those Dodge Challenger's to go with it 😍

petecarlton
All the love on this thread - entirely deserved by @briansbrew and @AndyTravis of course - but for the Bongo? I love them, they have such a rich and distinctive tone. And I'm sad I had to get rid of mine because of back problems and a decision to stick to short scales, but I remember about 18 months ago on this site there was a long thread where everyone was amusing themselves at the idea of "toilet seat" basses. The worm has turned!
AndyTravis
@petecarltoni put a wanted ad up on some Facebook pages. Every comment was “why” Or “toilet seat bass” etc. idiotic.

drTStingray
All this talk of Bongos must have influenced me - I used my BFR Bongo on Saturday night for one set - sounded great and especially good with a octaver. However even without the scratch plate, someone on Talkbass thought the combination of white with gold hardware really conjured up that image. I tend to feel there must be a few bass players around with unnaturally vivid toilet fetishes 😂😂🙄 Glad you’re enjoying yours @AndyTravis - both of mine have 5 strings (one is the obligatory orange - though not as striking as the tangerine pearl - which incidentally, you could get on a Stingray and other basses) - I have thought about getting a Bongo 4 in the past but am sort of stuck in the stingray or Stingrayish groove with 4 strings - for the other 45 on Saturday I used my Musicman Sabre.
