Does Humour Belong in Music?

I always found Peter & The Test Tube Babies pretty funny.  Quite self-deprecating and awfully British Punk.  I like this particular track as the guitar line in the chorus conjures up the image of a punk lad 'running like bloody hell'.

Where do we stand with Don't Jump Off The Roof, Dad by Tommy Cooper?

Well, in every genre there are your “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” songs and your “Float On” songs. I guess someone needs to be the latter…

I used to really like P&TTTB and enjoy the humour. Still do.

I used to have a P*ssed and Proud T-shirt.

Good example line from "The Moped Lads":

The moped lads, they think they're bad

If you hit them, they tell their dads

Of course it does. The caveat is that humour in any form tends to only work once, unlike beauty which works every time. Probably an over simplification, but a beautifully crafted lyric bears endless repetition whereas a funny lyric tends to wear thin quite quickly.

All IMO, of course.

A beautifully crafted lyric like

He had slyly inveigled her up to his flat to view his collection of stamps
And he said as he hastened to put out the cat, the wine, his cigar, and the lamps:

for example? Or

We've gained notoriety
And caused much anxiety
In the Audubon Society
With our games
They call it impiety
And lack of propriety
And quite a variety
Of unpleasant names
But it's not against any religion
To want to dispose of a pigeon

maybe? Beautifully crafted and humorous need not be mutually exclusive.

I say it was Zappa's instrumental music that was the most humorous. Examples - Holiday in Berlin Pts. 1&2 from Burnt Weenie Sandwich, and The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue from Weasels Ripped My Flesh. That one had me racing out to find out who Eric Dolphy was...Out To Lunch being my first purchase. Side-splitting music...
