Quick question regarding Fender bridges, the more modern type with string spacing adjustment.

Do you line the strings up with the pickup magnets or adjust the strings so that they are an equal distance apart from one another?

I do equal distance.

Ah, but do you mean the traditional way (equal distance between saddle contact points, so greater space between the thinner strings) or the Phil Lesh way (actual equal distance between strings, so wider saddle spacing on the lower strings)?

Equal between strings I think. I don’t measure, I do it visually. I set the outside strings first then the inner ones.

I was always told to line up the strings with the magnets for increased output?

It doesnt quite work like that. The magnetic field is not a neat column rising vertically out of the pole piece.

True, there is a broad magnetic field. Look at the P bass pole alignment.

Exactly. If strings are seriously out of line with pole pieces, it may cause an issue, but not otherwise. So you can adjust spacing for playing comfort.

Center of string... saddle contact.

Space between stings?... Thats just weired and thinking to hard!

Next you will be setting the width on the amount of propogation, as in how much each string moves!.. now there's a thought...
