Lets you split one or two strings to a separate output, basically, although the styling and ergonomics looks questionable to my eye...

Get a Variax and a Helix then.

 

You can footswitch strings on and off and even change their individual tunings.

I was being facetious in a vain attempt at sarcasm, as the originally posted pickup can only do the E&A or B&E strings. But then the six string PU was posted. 

All the while knowing it's possible as I have two Variax/Variaxs/Variaxi (?).

I've never actually tried a Variax. I love the idea but I'm very picky about guitar specs and none of the available models really do it for me.

I've only got the bass version.

The looks have never done it for me but I really like the necks, very skinny, so I went to town on the looks. All very trad Fender-esque but reshaped headstock and elephant ear tuners, f-hole and binding in the body, slightly different shaped new pickguard, refinish and a bridge cover. 

Not to everyone's taste but what is?

I picked up a second one which was going to be defretted but as the prices have risen I'm not so sure, I might get another neck for it.

I liked the idea of my Variax bass, but then I picked it up. Serious boat anchor stuff.

 

All the clever electronics are held in an enormous metal box, larger than most FX pedals, which is built into the body, so there's little that can be done to reduce the weight.

 

So I sold it again.

Played a gig with a guitar/drum 2 piece who was using this. The E/A strings were fed into an octave and fuzz to mimic a bass player. Of all the 2 piecer bands that try to work with a split signal they were of the better bands to pull off a solid full sound. 
 

Pretty cool but always better with a real bass… 😁
