Listening to some of Stax, funk, Philly stuff it struck me that there are quite a few bands that started out as a house band for labels and got be to be successful in their own right. I'm thinking of Booker T and the MGs for starters. So, any other house bands or backing groups that did well for themselves without their leaders?

The Band stared out as backing band for Ronnie Hawkins, then Bob Dylan. They did OK for themselves

In fact, they must be the ultimate example..... they are actually just called "The Band" after all!

Linda Ronstadt

Next question, before I Google, who's Linda Ronstadt?

I'll add the Glitter Band. IMO it's a shame they were tarnished by their former boss' shenanigans, with none of their songs since getting airplay.

Ronstadt’s band was the Stone Poneys. She had a lot to do with the formation of the Eagles, and toured with them and Pure Prairie League in the 70’s…I saw them in Denver…great concert!  IMO, one of the most noteworthy musicians of that era and pretty much responsible for and entire genre of country/folk rock.  Her documentary is well worth watching.

The Shadows come to mind.

Something else that comes to my mind is that whenever I see a Pino custom shop Precision, I think Jet Harris.

Right, as you were...

Two of our band members have bought a posh pub cum restaurant that is oft used as a wedding venue and we're going to become the house band for bookings.  A future of fame, fortune, and choking on vomit awaits!

mostly in the States by the look of it and no top 30 singles in the UK, other than a duet with Aron Neville, which is why I'd never heard of her

How about that Vandross fella lurking in the background here?

…I’ll give that one a miss then.

I remember the cereal cafe and the crisp sandwich cafe, but this takes things to a whole different level.

Atlanta Rhythm Section.

They were the house band at the legendary Studio One in Doraville before writing, recording and touring their own fantastic music.
