La Bella Bass VI Flats

Recommended Posts

Possibly a bit of a niche question, but has anyone tried these? I've got a Squier CV Bass VI, and I swapped the stock strings for a set of Newtones (roundwound), but the low E - even at .100 - still feels pretty loose and it's difficult to get a low action without a lot of fretbuzz. The La Bellas are .095 on the low E, but I wondered what the tension was like on them. I probably prefer the sound of flats to rounds so would rather have flats if possible.

I'm strictly a round-wound person on my Bass VIs, so I can't offer any advice on the LaBella Flats.

However there are a couple of things you could try first.

1. Have you raised the bridge and shimmed the neck to compensate, on your Bass VI? IME as much of the "floppy" feel of the E and A strings is down to them being too compliant due to the break angle over the bridge being too shallow. If you haven't already done this, I would suggest giving it a go, as otherwise alternative strings might still feel as loose.

2. GHS do a heavier set of round wounds for the Eastwood Hooky Bass VI with a 105 E. You can get them here.

3. If you are still having problems see if Newtone will wind you some custom sets to your specifications.

With regards to point 1, yes I have. The break angle on it is fine, but it's just on the low E that I have problems; the other strings are fine. I didn't know about the GHS strings, I'll have a look into them, or I might just ask Newtone if they can do me a single .105 to replace the one I've got on there already.
