Guest
Wenge for the incredible grain. I’ve swallowed my principles and picked up a German Sadowsky Metroline (astonishing - build quality is easily NYC-level or Fender custom shop) and the Pau Ferro board is incredible - very 3D. I’ve always found plain ebony boards to be incredibly dull - and I’m no fan of coffee table basses anymore, but I spend a reasonable time looking at the fretboard so it’s nice if it looks interesting

Reads like it is a super wood, availaible 1/1000000. Seams like it's very special and specific. Your choice, seems like You don't miss. nilorius
Any way, pau ferro is good, too. It's not black, but it's durable and good sounding.
Boodang
I used to prefer an ebony or resin board for fretless but now I've gone back to rosewood as my favourite. My latest custom bass has a slab rosewood board which is extended up to the neck pickup as a finger ramp. It could be just auto-suggestion but the TI flats feel more 'buttery' to play on the rosewood compared to my resin and ebony fitted basses. fretmeister
Depends on the body colour of the bass. As long as it is not covered in lacquer I’m not that fussy.
adamg67
I'm another ebony board lover, I've got two with ebony boards, one with rosewood ('62 AVRI P so fair enough) and one with Padouk, the Maruszczyk Hellwood, so that's allowed not to be black (but most of the rest of the bass is though). Bolo
All maple was great on my MM Sr5. Partial maple on the Cellar V neckthrough reinforced with carbon rods. Rosewood on the Spector, looks good.
Belka
I used to like rosewood and ebony, and still do like ebony for fretless, but for fretted I seem to favour harder rosewoods (Amazon, Brazilian), and maple and pau ferro. To me they just seem to give the sound more grit and cut through a bit better.
