So this evening is the first chance since the weekend that I have had to do a few little jobs including bringing an old flame back into the fold.

I will say I have owned this bass since 2006 but since I was in my early 20s and living at home it really hasn't been used I even made the choice to leave it at my parents home when I moved out many moons ago.

I have over the last couple of years purchased far to many basses, sold far to many basses but in doing so I came across the old receipt for when I purchased this bass (again a while ago but it started the itch) which has led to this point.

On Sunday I removed the bass from my old bedroom and we made the journey home.

The Bass in question is a Gibson EBO that has had John Birch convert it to EB3 type specs but with his pickup and bridge and although it's been a while it is very similar condition to when I last used it in anger with crazing the faded colour to a orangy gold rather than the cherry and all the knocks and marks expected with a bass from the 60s.

Today was finally time to show some TLC with new strings a gentle clean and then a really good oil of the board (not the best area to work but needs must sometimes)

The bass is now looking and playing great although I have yet to play through the amp as I ran out of time but I forgot how loud the bass is acoustic the vibrations through the body is totally surprising even more so when you consider the small body.

I love it can't wait to get it cranked up as I remember the Birch pickup being very hot.

Mojo is an overused word, but wow that bass has it in spades 😎 - definitely in a Jim Lea style

I was often tempted to do something similar when old EB-0’s were cheap as chips - sadly no longer..,..🙁

That bridge p/u looks unusual...

Do the 9 polepieces act together like a blade?Tell me more!

The John Birch hyperflux pickup. Allows the pickups to work with different string spacings (bass or guitar) and be adjustable. The JB SG bass I owned in the early 80s had two of them, black, maple neck. It also had some fiendish electronics that I never got to grips with. Had JB convert it back to regular type wiring (they were based in Bromsgrove at that time). The bridge was the same, quite a clever two post design. A well made bass but real bad neck diver :(
