Cancelled Culture

The more you gig, the more likely it is that you'll experience cancellations.

My main band (Damo & The Dynamites) is playing something like 60 gigs in 2022. So far, we've been cancelled because

  1. Poor ticket sales (we were the support)
  2. Power cut wiping out Watford and NW London
  3. Injury in a motorbike accident
  4. Car breakdown
  5. Freak heatwave

Currenty waiting for a plague of locusts ...

9. Band member who quit the band to form a new band thinks the remaining members of the band should not be allowed to continue without him despite telling us he hopes we continue so phones up all the venues to cancel all the gigs telling them the band has split up.

We were due to play in the evening after one of England's disastrous afternoon performances at a football World Cup.

The landlord phoned us an hour before we were due to  arrive and basically said don't bother as everyone has gone home in a mood.

Slightly OT, but reminds me of a wedding we were booked for a few years ago.

The couple split up a few weeks before the ceremony, so the bride turned it into

a party for her friends and family as they’d paid for everything anyway.

We had to wait until they’d all watched England play a crucial match on a big screen behind the stage, and then did our two sets of wedding/party stuff.

The bride held it all together very well bless her, and a good time had by all.

As you were....

Ooooh, that one is nasty.

Yes, very. I do hope that someone had a little chat with him about that. The sort of chat that begins with "I want a word with you" and ends in "ouch".

Oh it gets worse, we then turned up at some gigs to find out he's told the landlady that we were not a 5 piece any more and only a 4 piece so we should get paid less. He also created a fake email address similar to a venue's own email to then try to make out the venue had cancelled us. When we spoke to the person who booked us at the venue, he confirmed that he had not sent the email or cancelled the band and we worked out that the email was very similar to the original with just a digit different and it was fake. Plus he tried to ban us from travelling abroad despite having accommodation and gigs booked by withholding ferry tickets and telling us we were not allowed to be in the country the same time as him 😄

Strewth, you couldn't make that up. You're definitely well shot of him.

What about a cancellation because someone in the village is having a party, and all the locals will be going to that, so the pub will be empty...

But weren't you the only band in the village?

Surely as soon as the band picked up this was happening with the first gig he messed up for you, the band should have contacted each individual venue of your future bookings to clarify and confirm you were still performing at them at the agreed dates.

This is exactly what we ended up doing after the second time it had happened. Some venues did actually confirm he had contacted them to try and cancel the gigs claiming various excuses. We also backed everything up with an email so they had our new email address, band name and details.

I feel I have lead a charmed life never to have encountered such a narcissistic freakshow.
