August is upon us and that means one thing, it's time for another challenge!

A joint win by @Doctor J and  @upside downer  in July with 2 excellent tracks and a subsequent choice of image from the latter, with the comment ....

"This image from Alan Schaller's Metropolis collection, which examines 'how we are dwarfed in the modern world around us and often lost in it'.

That's deep!

Simple rules

✔️ Entries must be <5 minutes and recorded this month.

✖️ No illegal samples, copyright infringements or other snide goings-on

✔️  Bagpipes. the Edinburgh festival/fringe truce * . panpipes only if you have too.

✖️ No voting for your own entry. We'll know. And we'll shame you.

A line or two offering an insight to your inspiration/track choice will be good as well , it works nicely on the voting thread.

The Deadline for entries is Midnight on Wednesday 24th August

good luck everyone

* well, you don't have to, honestly :D

When I saw that pic I thought it was the station I used on my daily commute.  I can't tell for sure. but be afraid - the station in question was Baker St.

In other news I accepted an offer on the house yesterday.  That means the dining room can convert back into my temporary studio.  Be afraid -I think I'm back.

I might struggle this month

Shame! We'll miss your dulcet tones 😁

You'll be pleased to hear I've got some singing in mine... Plus 2 basses and a guitar solo! And even more excitingly, it's only about 2 mins twenty.

Currently removing some of the obvious loggyness, and preparing the plastic-free glitter and water-based varnish.

A bit of a struggle, this month, despite the excellent picture as incentive. Nothing major; just not well, s'all. :$ I did have a go at recording a line of acoustic guitar, but had to abandon, it was so badly played. If I get a late visit from any Muse, it's possible I could come up with something virtual, but it's not looking good as of now. We'll see :( ...

I've got mine done.  All the parts are monophonic (that was my own challenge).  The majority of parts are played on keys (not programmed in) & the big dirty bass that plays the melody was my bass popped through isotopes Trash 2.

All aboard the train to here.....

Well, despite 'stuff', I managed this ...

Here is my contribution to the August 2022 Basschat Composition Challenge, inspired by a picture chosen by one of the previous winners: Upside Downer.
Well, she said 'Platform 2, eight o'clock.' It's now... Let me see... Hmm... Half-past midnight. Maybe she's not coming..? I'll give it another hour or so...
Can't get much more minimalist that this, this month. A few minutes of me, loosening up on the drums. It's an e-kit (Millenium MPS850...). Recorded 'live' (that much will be obvious; no re-dubs or editing at all...), directly from the module into a USB stick, and transferred to Reaper, so the sounds are those of the e-kit itself. No treatment, other than my standard Reaper NY Glue compression on the Master tracks, as usual.
Thanks for listening, if you already have; if you're about to, enjoy.

I done one too...

It's about a lonely bloke thinks he's been stood up on the Metro. Not only that but he hasn't got a clue where he needs to get to. So he contemplates just stepping off in front of the next train, but instead, checks his phone and discovers that a perfect French fella has just swiped right on him on Grindr. Previous date forgotten, next one eagerly anticipated!

Basses, 2xWal through various Helix FX. Guitar, strat also through Helices. Vox all Gregorian Chantified with Raum and some pitch shifting, drums EZ Drummer, sequencer AAS. All mixed in Ableton, with some Bias FX for good measure and plenty Neutron and Ozone.

... and here's the 'mash-up'; my drums and Lenny's ... well, whatever Lenny does. I set the controls to the heart of the sun set my drums to his frenetic 131 bpm, that's all. Great team, eh..? Hors Concours, obviously, just for fun. (and apologies to Lenny...)

I honestly didn't expect to get a track in this month, but as luck would have it, I managed to knock one out (ooh, err Mrs... etc).

I loved the Negative space in the image, which gave me my title, and that sent me down the wormhole of my own reflections while waiting for the tube, and my wondering at the perceptions of others there, surrounded by people, and yet alone. It's a bit about how the city will consume you if you let it.

Tech Wise - It's my first attempt at recording double bass, hence the heavy percussive sound that I don't yet know to moderate, I should know better... I have had it a couple of weeks now!🤣 I went straight into the interface from the piezo, which may have been an error, I'll try the Fishman preamp next time. The whole tune started out much lighter than this, but as it started to suggest big guitars I was reluctant to lose the Upright in favour of Bass Guitar, so it's a bit experimental.

Otherwise, it's MT Power Drums, The old Westbury Standard through the Helix, and the VSTs that come bundled with Cubase Elephants 10, a sample and hold thing and a new age tinkly thing. Vocals done over with CLA Vocals.

The song: For some reason, I envisioned a male escort on his way home after a late... ehhh... shift, I suppose. He's a good guy, alone in a world which just doesn't understand.

The technical stuff: Yamaha drums into Thomann mics into Behringer interface, as always. I tried a little bit of damping on the snare top skin, kind of going for an old-school disco sound but I think I missed. I tried additional percussion too, for effect, That's right. Cowbell. There are four bass tracks on there. A high one with the Ashdown octaver thing on, plus a low bass during the verses. The other two was messing around with a Boss Synth Bass pedal, which was a lot of fun. Guitars were a Tokai 335 and a Bacchus strat into an Avid Eleven, as always, but there's not much guitar on there. Sometimes it's just basses stacked or just one bass synth track. I wanted to do some wah stuff, in keeping with the theme, but the pot in my wah pedal is scratchy and cleaner couldn't cure it. Instead, I tried some envelope filter stuff which didn't really come out well. Vocals are me trying desperately not to sound like myself, including 6 tracks of BVs to try to make it sound all motown, like. Yeah, that didn't really come together either. Ah well.
