thisnameistaken
I like Jazz basses, but I want a bound and blocked rosewood board and - tricky bit - a 24-fret neck with good access to the dusty end. So I suppose that means a shorter Jazz body (which would suit me anyway because I'm scrawny, and big bass bodies look silly on me). And I might want it to be a 5. I haven't quite decided. I've seen Fender sell a 24-fret Jazz but from what I can gather they're Korean and not very good. Does anyone else make one or am I looking at a custom bass? That aside, i cant think of a stock 24 fretter 5 string Jazz that has a bound neck and blocks? If you decide to go the custom route, for me John Shuker seems to build basses that i have heard are awsome to a modest amount of cash.. I do think that a bound, blocked neck is going to add alot of squids to what you may pay out though, and im not sure if John has 24 fret jazz basses in his inventory..Any makers from the states like Mike Lull, Sadowsky, who do 24 fret basses will hammer you on the £.And you will have a long wait.. There is a maker from Europe who makes awsome Jazz basses at a very good price, the name is Maruszczyk.. A chap on here called AREA can point you in the right direction Whats your budget, if you dont mind me asking??
thisnameistaken
I don't like to pay more than about £7-800 for a bass, so I was hoping to get something either common as muck or used. I didn't mean to slight your Jazz 24 it's just all the anecdotal stuff I've read on the internets was saying they weren't that great. Sounds like yours is a good one, but it's still that classic Fender scenario of having to hunt for the good one.
velvetkevorkian
Warmoth do Fender replacement necks with an overhanging fingerboard- I doubt you'd have great access to the upper frets but it could work, depending on how you play. OutToPlayJazz
It may be worth having a trawl around the stores and a phone around, as the Korean made Fender jazz 24 has now been deleted. You may get a bargain somewhere! The other option is John Shuker. If memory serves, his jazzes start at around £800 & I'm sure he could do one with a 24 fret neck. Haha! Just looked at the discontinued products on the Dawson's Music page... Look at the price http://www.dawsons.co.uk/acatalog/info_00070739.html Edited April 18, 2009 by OutToPlayJazz

I was hoping someone might know of an off-the-shelf bass I could pick up that I hadn't spotted. I'll have to have another look around and see if anything with a Jazz-ish vibe catches my eye. ~tl
Don't Sadowsky do a 24-fret Jazz? Though, admittedly, it may be a little above your price range...
SJA
Sei do 24 fret jazz-types- a 2nd-hand one might fall in your price range.
