Now asking  £900 £850 collected.

Welcome to the reluctant sale of this fantastic versatile instrument, which I have owned since 2014. Presented in good used condition, there are a few marks to the paint and headstock, but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance. The scratch plate is not original, but I think most will agree it looks cool. I do have the original pearloid item somewhere (I think in my parent's garage), and will happily forward on to the new custodian once located. Comes with original branded hard case, which is a little battered but still works well.

In terms of playability, the bass is sublime, and has one of the best necks I've come across. Good action, and the active EQ works as it should.

So why am I selling? Well, I'm finally going to be gigging again soon, and since sustaining an injury to my wrist a couple of years back, I'm really limited in what basses I can play comfortably whilst standing up. Unfortunately, this doesn't fit the bill anymore.

I'd prefer a cash sale, but would consider a trade for a Highway One P-Bass in a colour other than candy-apple red.

I wouldn't say this is a super rare instrument, but probably fairly scarce in this colour combo, and looking at what's sold in the past... I'd say the price is about right.

Any trial/examination welcome at my house in Fetcham, Leatherhead. I now have an amp in the house again, which you're welcome to use. I do travel along the M4 corridor as far as West Wales quite frequently, so can work something out if you're far away.

Thanks for looking. Some Specs below...

Instrument Weight: 9.55lbs 4.34kg

So why am I selling? Well, I'm finally going to be gigging again soon, and since sustaining an injury to my wrist a couple of years back, I'm really limited in what basses I can play comfortably whilst standing up. Unfortunately, this, and the Mockingbird I'm selling in another ad do not fit the bill anymore

I'd prefer a cash sale, but would consider a trade + cash either way for another quality P-Bass with a thinner/smaller/flatter(?) neck, or something interesting in a medium scale length. I'm currently borrowing a friend's 2003 USA Highway One Precision, which seems to fit perfect in my hands. I don't know what kind of neck profile that is, but if someone is in the know please feel free to educate me!

Just spotted this. If you like a P bass but prefer a slimmer neck (in terms of front to back thickness), there are necks out there that are slimmer than USA Standards. I don't know for certain about the neck profile of the Highway One P basses, but I know that the American Specials made from around 2010-2014 had a slimmer neck, measuring 0.790" at the 1st fret, and I believe that this model was itself an update of the Highway One P bass. I don't know if you have a set of digital calipers to measure your neck thicknesses, but regardless, clearly you can feel the difference with your own hands from your 1997 USA and your friend's 2003 Highway 1.

For some context, I struggled with a 2008 USA P bass, the neck thickness of which measured 0.850 at the 1st fret. The 2013/14 MIM I am selling has a nice playable, relatively slim front to back thickness of 0.820" at 1st fret, and a 2021 Player P bass I just acquired has an even slimmer thickness of just 0.800" at 1st fret, near identical to the American Specials. I'd guess that the neck profile of this is very similar to that of your friend's Highway 1. I also have a Squier Vintage Modified PJ bass measuring 0.792" at 1st fret. So P basses with slimmer necks are out there for sure. Also lighter weight ones too. My Player is not much over 8lbs. I hope this has been helpful.

Thanks man. That's kind of you and very helpful. I think the highway one, and some of these American Specials, Mexican player series have "Modern C" profile necks, so that's what I've been looking at to buy. I spotted your listing earlier, and it looks right up my alley. Shame we're at other ends of the country to try it out, but if this sells, I might take the punt blind.

Cheers!

You’re welcome. I’ve only learned this stuff in recent months myself. Just be aware that there is still a huge amount of variation in what Fender call a ‘Modern C’ shape neck.

Whilst the American Specials had ‘Slim Modern C’ clearly stated in the spec, the thinnest and thickest P bass necks I mentioned above both just said ‘Modern C’ in Fender’s ‘Serial Number Check’. It’s very infuriating. It’s hard to tell, but from the photos the neck of the 97 Deluxe looks reasonably chunky, in which case I can see why you love the Highway 1 neck.

The MIM I’m selling is a bit lighter than your Deluxe, and I’m sure a buyer could shed some weight off it should they choose to, by installing a lighter bridge (though the Hipshot is very good). The neck is quite slim for a P and very playable.
