I have never personally encountered any grounding problems with the chrome shells on these pickups, but I do know that Lakland had a manufacturing problem with the Chi humbuckers - a large proportion of them were not usable from new after due to grounding issues after they had been potted in wax and had to be discarded at the factory - so much so that they discontinued those humbuckers in the chrome shells for a while last year . They have, apparently, remedied the problem and are now offering them in the chrome shells again, as well as a new version using anlico magnets as opposed to the neodymium ones used in the standard Chi Sonics. That problem, however, only applies to the humbuckers, whereas the standard Decade uses single coils housed in humbucker shells purely for cosmetic effect. The single coil version in a humbucker shell was not affected by the same problem of shorting out like the humbucking version was, and was never discontinued. I haven't heard about this problem with the hum before now, but I suppose using chrome surrounds you are asking for trouble.

Lakland never stopped using chrome shells on the Skyline Decade, but rather offer it , as with the other Chi Sonics, in a plastic shell as an alternative option if the customer prefers it.for whatever reason. A couple of basses with that option were pictured on the internet and some people started to assume that the chrome covers were no longer standard, when in fact they still were . When the Chi humbuckers were discontinued in the chrome shells they were still available in the plastic covers because the problems were specific to the chrome version.

For a while (around 2010) there was an upcharge for the chromed covers ($100 if I recall correctly) on the Skyline.

Very nice. It took a while but I eventually realized the familiarity of the riff.

You think it sounds dark Dave? I tend to link "dark" with flats, muting and thumpiness myself

By 'dark', I think what I had in mind was being short scale there would be a stronger fundamental but I compared it with the Lakland website long scale sound samples and the difference, I felt, was small. Strangely, I've always thought the mahogany on these does something to the sound - this is odd because I am tonewood-denier so I don't even take it seriously myself.

Either way it sounded great but mostly and unsurprisingly really just like a Decade.

I've considered asking Lakland to sell me a short scale neck to put on the skyline. On the other hand I've been planning to sell the Decade because I am not using it.

Makes sense, although I'm pleased you agree that it still sounds very much like a normal Decade as that's what I thought as well. I had actually considered asking if you would sell your one, but thought it a bit too cheeky and kept quiet. To be honest I think if you don't use it now it won't make much difference being short scale. I would only use my Pino but for the fact that I recorded a good few of my current bands stuff using my decade so it feels wrong to use something else now.

Well, I've been wanting one of these forever so I couldn't really pass up the opportunity now could I?

Well, maybe I could....but I didn't :)

Buzzed like mad when I touch the pickup surrounds however, so I did my previous tried and tested trick - I cut a small spring in half, soldered a ground wire to it and put it between the pickup body and one of the screws. As you tighten the pickup screw down, it squashes the spring underneath the pickup body, grounding the chromed plastic surrounds. So now when I rest my thumb on the pickup surround it's totally silent. I also did a full shield job on the cavity (getting good at it now). Amazes me that at this price range Lakland do not shield their basses.

Brilliant ! I was pondering the best way to earth the surrounds...the spring idea - very smart.

I think I'll be dloing that this afternoon !

Many thanks

Did the business and it worked a treat.

I used the Skyline for the first time this afternoon at a jam and it sounded ace - and no buzz.

My 2000 USA 55-94 just returned from The Gallery after the fret job and the addition of a cream pearl plate... it had its first outing on Friday and it was everything I hoped it would be. :)

Love the colouring!!!

This beauty/beast now belongs to me. Very proud - and that's set to increase when I finally get to play her in a large venue on Sunday!

I'm toying with the idea of adding a pickguard, but only if it's transparent. Anyone knows where to get one?

Jeannie's pick guards in the States, or more locally perhaps, The Gallery in Camden just made the plate for my black 55-94 in the post immediately before yours.

I'm afraid Jeannie's is on hold - sadly Roger passed away and no decision has been made yet regarding the future of the company.

Hi Pete, Yep, it's still here, and sorry but I'm definitely keeping it.

I'm playing it at home these days, but I was thinking about putting flats on and gigging with it again.

Hi Chris what 5-string flats set would you recommend for the Lakland?

Really sorry to hear that - I bought a plate for my 55-02 from him just a few months ago. It was beautifully made. Sad news.

Hi, I still haven't got around to changing the strings, but the Lakland flats on my Lull would be a good place to start.

They are Lakland Joe Osborn Signature, Medium, Stainless Steel, 45/65/85/106 and (I think) 125.

It's a real beast of a bass - compared to my Ibanez the tones are poles apart. But it's easy to play and will be even more so once I acclimatize to the string spacing. I'll be keeping my Ibanez or probably upgrade to the new 5006s but the Lakland is now my main player...

and it might only be me, but through the markbass rig at my church, I find the Lakland not as plain loud or powerful as the Ibanez. But the Lakland has no dead spots and the high notes ring out. It wont forgive any bum notes or intonations I dont think.

[/quote]Glad that you're liking it, I would agree that Ibanezes possibly deliver more output, but that maybe down to pickup heights, however, the tone of the 5502 is soooo nice, more 'old school' to my ears.
