Glyn plays bass
So I need to buy a 5 string for a new musical project. it’s been years since I went instrument shopping, I was hoping to try a few out before I bought one. annoyingly, the shops local to me I tried in Southampton and Portsmouth had hardly any in stock. can anyone recommend where might have a selection of 5 string basses to try or another way of trying before I buy? currently I’m having to base my decision on specs, you tube reviews and looks, not ideal! thanks in advance
lownote
Having had several six and five string basses, my humble thought is to agree with you that more than with 4 strings you can't buy on spec. I've had basses that looked perfect on paper and image but left me cold in my lap. Others were the reverse: no-hopers that proved great to play. GLWYS. OliverBlackman
I think 4 strings tend to sell better. There’s far more on the s/h market and a 5 string version of a bass always seems harder to get your hands on. I’d expect you’d have sufficient choice at the bass gallery or bass direct. Bass bros have a few now too I think.
Lozz196
Take a trip up to Andertons, in Guildford they’re not too far away from you, usually have a decent range of gear in there.
Sibob
Yeah, Andertons, Guitar Guitar, Bass Gallery, Bass Bros and Bass Direct will be your best bet for plenty of stock….all are going to take you a couple of hours I’m guessing. But nice Saturday out for you I suppose 🙂 Si
