Acrylic MUSICMAN STINGRAY

The "Acrylic stingray" is almost ready:

The story behind this is quite simple. I'm an enormous stingray fan (we all are I guess) and already own two of them.

But I also love the EGC acrylic line, and love how all those clear guitars look. They're something else, art pieces almost.

I played a Dan Armstrong a few times and loved the weight and clear (pun intended) sound.

Sure it's heavy, but I can manage it.

So I thought to combine the look of the original stingray with a Dan Armstrong/EGC.

I ordered a custom made acrylic block from a Dutch Laboratory, I got the seymour duncan humbucker for free (when the store owner heard about the project), I found a stingray special bridge online, ordered a Status graphite stingray neck and had a custom preamp made (that was also free).

There was a test run done with a cnc in wood and this week the acrylic was made. Sorry for the bad pic, they're screengrabs of videos.

The body still needs some polishing but after that it's PERFECT.
The specs are exactly the same as an original stingray body.

I can't wait for this to be finished but I'm still looking for an official six bolt neckplate though ...

Made by Dimitri Derwael of elinore guitars.

(I know that some people will call this a gimmick. I don't want this to be a gimmick, I want this to be a bass with good materials and an unique look.

I've researched this for 2 years (what plexi to use, etc.) and the fact that companies like EGC charges 3000 euro's for basses like this says something right?

Hopefully some of you think it's nice :(

Not a gimmick at all. It's your bass - it's up to you. Personally, I quite like the look of an acrylic bass - to some it may look a bit 80's or early 90's but that's OK anyway.

Only avoid if you play regularly in a nudist camp! Lol 😉

If you’re ok with the weight (which you say you are) this will be amazing. There is something about a plexi instrument. Looking forward to the completed photos.

Yes, I've held several acrylic basses and I'm ok with it 🙂

Same here, I'm always attracted to see through things in general. I remember having a see through gameboy when I was a kid and loved it as well.

I'll post more when I get them 🙂

Eventually a professional photographer will take pics of it.

Awesome - I do love a see-through bass, can't wait to see the finished article.

I put together a cheapo acrylic P a few years back, picked up the body from an Axl-branded bass for a few quid & a maple/blocks neck:

Any excuse...

Funilly enough…guess what I was doing 10 years ago today

Fender aren't new to acrylic - they made this (designed by Roger Rossmeisl) for Carl Wilson in 1972. Would love to see a bass version!

they used to make acrylic stuff for trade shows too - have seen a strat from 60’s/70’s.

Gary Beer from INXS had - a fully acrylic fender and John Entwistle had one with a 70’s neck on it

I doubt you'll find a genuine one – I looked for ages for a Stingray clone I've been building for the last three years

Tone5 do one (from Taiwan) and this place:

Good luck – bass looks great btw

Update of the neck

And I decided to matte out th ebass.

The see through finish showed too much of the black grounding in my opinion.
And to be honest the "frosted" matte look, looks classier and less as a gimmick.

Hope you all like the progress.

What are your tone control options/ideas? 2 band eq or 3 or passive?

I can recommend John East's MM 3 band preamp to compliment that pickup, I used both in my 'BlazerRay' renovation documented on here, they are a fantastic combination but would require a battery compartment and side jack socket 🤔

Bass looks great tho, nice work! 👍🏼

It is finished.

I might sell it in the future. It's VERY heavy and sound great!

Very stingray like.

- Status neck, with musicman logo > brand new
- Basslines pickup
- Custom pre-amp
- Custom neckplate
- Schaller tuners
