My god, how could anyone find this piece of art ugly?

Strange, as I love it - but I do get the opposite!

Because some people see it as a piece of art?

I don't think it's ugly btw, just a bit... unapproachable.

Now that’s close to the sort of comment I get - that it looks unwieldy or difficult to get on with and a bit “odd”

This isn't the thread for it of course, but are there any more pics of this bass on the site? I've only ever seen that one. I'd love to see more as that is just stunning

There might be in the fretless thread, but just for indulgence sake:

And the other comment I get is that the light bits on the top look like scratches or marks and look ugly - it’s actually figuring in the African Blackwood and completely natural!

I think the light marks make it. There is a very similar uberhorn that doesn't have the marks, I prefer the one with, it adds a highlight.

Only because it is a fretless! The uberhorns are supremely comfortable and mine is so light.

Only downside is they wouldn't be so good for someone who wanted to use a plectrum at the time.

This one will definitely be ugly to a lot of people... Personally I think it's ugly, absolutely ridiculous and I've never wanted a guitar more in my life :D 🤣

Funnily enough, I get a 50/50 split of hate/love for my Shuker fretless.

Some people seem to think it's the most incredibly beautiful bass they have ever seen, and yet others say it's truly hideous and an affront to their senses.

Certainly seems some think it's ugly but others not at all...

Now, if Jens had just done the colour swatches on the body and left the pickups and fretboard as normal, that would work. A real example of less being more and more being so much less.

Love that. Which isn't surprsing as most of his colourwork is good

I love all of Jens Ritters designs except for the very slightly angled pickups which always look wrong to me. Since they are under covers, surely it would be no big deal to make the covers slightly bigger so they could be straightened up (but still have angled pickups hidden underneath). Although does that very slight angle actually make any difference to the sound?

Agreed, they look a bit odd like that (even more so on that one where you see how they are out). My shuker has slightly angled pickups, but as they are black on black and only jazz size, they don't really notice but as his are big, they do.

I think it's lovely. I shall resist the temptation to ask about a 5-string version. No, really, I will.

The exact opposite for me - it's not quite as foul as most Ritters (still a bit of a moose though) - but the colours are amazing.

I like them too. My opinion may be coloured by the fact I love my Antoniotsai which has a distinct Ritter homage feel to it, even to the slopey pickups. I bought it in 2007, at which point I'd never heard of Ritter.

The body is lovely, not so keen on the fretboard or the pickups - I think I'd describe them as fussy.

I absolutely love that. I'm in the camp that would prefer a plain black fretboard but overall, it is just stunning. Every single colour looks so rich and glorious, and Jens Ritter's colour work actually looks great in real life too (unlike say, Kiesel).

Yes, I'd play the hell out of that bass.

This popped up in my instagram feed, would it count?

Personally I wouldn’t touch it with a stolen Richard but I’ve never been a fan of 1950’s kitchen cupboard formica.
