Still getting notifications from unfollowed threads

I've noticed that if I unfollow a thread I'm still getting notifications for it.

Does the unfollow take time to propagate to the notifications settings?

Is this a thread that you had commented on, or one you were following, as I get notifications of anything I commented on, even if I unfollow.

I guess it shouldn't be that way

Yes - I've commented in it.

I may even have turned off notifications in the thread before unfollowing, but I'm not sure.

I don’t get notifications if I unfollow a thread unless someone quotes me in it
