So I went to Andertons, knowing that they sell DiMarzio pickups and asked for a quote.  Well, that was 31st January.  They took all the details and said they'd get back to me.  I chased them a week later.  They replied and said they'd chase it.  I have had not a peep back, although I'm sure this is as much the distributor's fault as anyone's.

Aye, I just had the same - 16th January I asked after availability of USA Stingrays that weren't the couple of colours they had in stock. Said they'd let me know, but that was the last I heard from them. Took my money elsewhere and got one I'm pleased with so it's all good, but I was surprised that they didn't seem to fancy an easy profit on a box-shifting exercise.

Talkbass - I wonder if the reason people over there generally get offended so easily and yet are happily confident enough to attack others disproportionately is because everyone has guns in real life? (or so we're led to believe) 🤔

It's a different mindset on there for sure.

Some there seem to think health care is the gateway to communism.

They even think going metric will lead there.

But I’ve found excellent retailers in the US. And despite the exchange and shipping I’ve made some cross border purchases. Mostly because the service has been beyond wonderful. I’ve dealt with people that really knew the product and were very keen to help.

Few yrs back i was buying a couple of Harley Davidson waterproof leather jackets at £600 each in UK. Out of curiosity i contacted HD in Topeka, Kansas and asked if they could supply. The guy was immensely helpful and said to try the jackets on in my local dealer and send him the sizes. I got both for £550 plus import tax etc of circa £100. That included postage. They were sent from Kansas to Chicago and flown over. I kept in touch with him for many years and he even gave me advice on places to visit if i decided to come over. He did not recommend touring on a bike and suggested i would have a better experience touring with a car. Unusual for a Harley Dealership to say that.

US has some amazing shops and some amazing people who are very genuine and helpful.

If you dont mind the import tax and a possible wait then its worth a shot contacting them.

Nope, but thanks for the sweeping generalization......:)

Would love to hear more about your health care/communism concept. After spending the first 50+ years of my life in the US, I don't think I am familiar. Now, if you want to talk about Federally-funded health care, we might achieve common ground. Love the NHS, but it would never work in a nation as diverse as the US. Maybe state-run health care, but then you run into "haves" in more prosperous or less populated states (think North Dakota) and "have nots" in the opposite end of the spectrum. It's a harder nut to crack over there, but still not linked to communism....

I live in Canada (with a health care system that is falling apart) , but I was referring to some in the US that are against taxpayer funded health care. And I have heard some in the US refer to the metric system as being part of a Socialist plot. They also believed that I was trying to take their guns away.

Sounds like members of the tinfoil hat club to me. It would be pretty hard to sell gun confiscation in the part of the US I grew up in (midwest farm country).

To be fair it wasn't the mods that were the problem for me.

Nor me, in fact when some berk decided to ruin my NBD by making snide remarks about my new Ric, he got a kicking from them (he had previous it turns out). I liked it well enough, but there were issues with what was considered sacrilege, again not from the mods but the everyday users. BC just has a nicer vibe for me, probably due to it being UK based and if I had discovered BC first, I probably wouldn't ever have ventured into TB.

On the other hand i've spoken with some really nice guys on TB too who have been exceptionally helpful with one offering to sell me his Mesa TT800 at enough of a reduced cost that even adding import tax etc it worked out same as a new one which wasn't too bad as there was no chance of getting one for few yrs but it was too much of a risk getting it sent over and i didn't want to risk that offer of friendship with it getting lost in transit. Still a great offer when he could have sold it in US for almost new price.

Met some really nice people on TB so its not all bad but with the amount of members you are bound to get the bad ones.

BC is more like a big family of friends that want to help each other no matter what the issue is, good or bad.

That's why i like being on BC.

One mod in particular needs the stick removing from his back passage. Zero appreciation for the British sense of humour. Cannot distinguish nastiness from good natured ribbing, lets fly with the ban hammer.

F that noise. Nice to be here.

I think that was a big part of it plus i didn't always get the US sense of humour. We definitely view things in a different way.

It sometimes doesn't translate. Lobster's discord server is a bit like that sometimes - but not to the same degree as that, more just like asking if I'm being mean rather than deciding I am being mean and getting a timeout or whatever. Either that or the intended effect is lost on people.

There are things I would say here that I just don't bother with in a more US-centric setting. It's just the way it is. We can't expect everyone to be on board with our particular brand of humour.

I've had PM discussions about bass with guys in Australia, Brazil, Argentina and the US, all via posts on Talkbass.

I joined TB in 2007, and so far haven't personally experienced any of the downsides that seem to bug others here. But after witnessing a few blow ups I can see why TB is so aggressively moderated. I prefer to post with care.

I like the more relaxed approach here. Having said that, after some stupid posts during lockdown, I have 3 users blocked on BC. Something I've never wanted to do on TB.
