I’m looking for a short scale (30/31”) 6 string (B-C) along the  lines of a Brice HBX 406 3/4 or similar.

I’ve posted in the wanted section but this forum seems more active. Any ideas for alternative models appreciated.

ACG does short scale 5s and 6s.

Not cheap though.

This is just the first example I could find

30.5" scale.

Other body shapes are available.

A Squier Bass VI and have some fettling done to take a B-C set? Might not be possible with the trem and tuners, however.

Edit: Looking at the Brice, my suggestion probably isn’t the type of thing you’re looking for.

I've got a few 31.5" ACG 6ers, and a 26.5"...

I have tuned the 26.5"er B to C, and it works, but I find it cool to have something tuned a little differently around too.

Second ACG.

I have a 30.5" ACG 6 Salace E-Type. A very nice thing indeed.

Well, I increased the budget and have acquired this magnificent beast.

Having now been playing it for a few hours it’s right up there with the best.

Now I still need a 6 short scale fretless…. 🤔

It's a stunning bass... I'm already suffering sellers remorse! 😭

But... it just didn't see any use against by two 33" scale ACGs, so sending it off to a good home and replacing it with something 'a bit different' seemed sensible.

I was sorely tempted by one of those Salace basses ( the one that played the theme to the bass chat pod casts in fact).  Then tried a Chowny 5 string with a 32.5" scale ( which Mr Chowny said was the shortest you could go with a low B) ... flobby low tension B string, not great.

Tried all manner of 5s and could only get on with the full scale ones.

How's the acg at the bottom end?

It seems perfectly usable. The neck is slightly asymmetrical and thicker on the B side to stiffen it.

And the B is very full due to the filter preamp.

That Salace was Si's and it's a 33" scale 😉

The low B on my 31.5" ACGs are brilliant, perfectly musical and comparable to any decent 34" bass in my opinion.

Here's some noodles on the 31.5" headless ACG Salace 6er >>

There's some low B being used on a couple of them.

The low B on another bass I'm lucky to own, my ACG Finn SC Classic 6 string, also 31.5" scale is absolutely phenomenal, in part thanks to a super rigid Wenge neck and a really solid and extended connection between the neck and body with it being a bolt on single cut.

Design and wood selection plays a big role here, and I think with Alan making all his ACGs by hand it's possible for him to get so much more from a bass.

Chere's,

Eude

I don't doubt it!

Does it have special short scale strings?

I get custom wound Newtones, but I have tried regular strings too with good results, easier on the headlesses as you just lop the extra off, I have to wind the excess round the tuners on the headed basses, hence the custom strings. There's nothing custom about them bar the length.
