They were a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, like those sweat bands people loop around their basses nut for whatever reason.

I was really hoping to find something that the auto correct makes funny. So far the auto correct isn't changing any of the names for male genetalia - and I've tried half a dozen

What are the sweatband things at the nut for?

They prevent sweaty nuts: like duh!

Also the skateboarders came back for their ramps.

My ramps are alive and kicking thanks... I think the answer to the OP's question is that the Gary Willis/Matthew Garrison 4-finger right-hand style is not so prominent or popular at the moment but ramps are still a fixture on many high-end basses destined for jazz use.

They dampen and cut down the overtones of open strings , I’ve got them on all my basses

Is that the same as popping a bit of foam under the strings by the bridge?

But then you play with your basses submerged in a vat of silicone-based gel in order to minimise any risk of harmonic content 😉

Not really as the foam will mute the fretted notes while the fretwrap is the open strings
