GrimUpNorth Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Hi My son got a Yamaha TRBX174 for his birthday last year and he subsequently got a Fender Rumble LT25 and stand. Its coming up to his birthday again and I was looking for something to get him. He says he'd like some new strings and I've asked if he would like some lessons but he says he's ok using the online resources at the mo, so I was looking at something else and so far the only thing I can think of is a cleaning kit. Having had a quick look I'm not sure if they are actually a good idea. I don't play so any advise would be gratefully received....along with any bass present ideas. A friend gave him a strap so that's covered. Thanks Quote
acidbass Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 What about a pedal? A tuner or something a bit more daring like an overdrive? Quote
ezbass Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Another vote for a pedal, an octaver or chorus would be my shout. Quote

Mudpup Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 (edited) One of these Nux Mighty Plugs..... Rechargeable tiny bluetooth headphone amp for silent practice - just plug it into your jack socket, connect your phone (Spotify/YouTube) via bluetooth, stick your headphones in and you're good to go. Amp Sims and effects included. It's a fab bit of kit for £58 and he can practice anywhere. https://www.gak.co.uk/en/nux-mighty-plug-headphone-amplifier-with-bluetooth-/954524 Edited January 16, 2023 by Mudpup 1 Quote
Waddo Soqable Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 With a straight multi fx pedal tho, he can still use it for silent practice by plugging h/phones in, but he can also use it "out loud" with his amp Quote
thodrik Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Leads, cables, or as my brother likes to give me 'T-shirts with terrible bass related puns or jokes': A small sample of what I have received over the last few years: My wife utterly hates them, which means that my brother will continue sending me them for as long as we are both alive (he is 38 and I am 36). If we stay in good health then that is possibly 80 more t-shirts if a t-shirt is provided every birthday and Christmas. 1 Quote
PaulThePlug Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Zoom B1on... Just the ticket! Bargain... 1 Quote
lemmywinks Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 A decent gigbag is always appreciated, something that will protect the bass but also be easy to transport. The TGI Extreme ones are reasonably priced: https://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/TGI-Extreme-Series-Bass-Guitar-Gig-Bag/2WP4?origin=product-ads&gclid=Cj0KCQiAiJSeBhCCARIsAHnAzT82y_TUXZ6_Cwqz6-8_GQyfV2zZHjrjdkNTnX9CE3RdOlLSqTLN8IYaApI3EALw_wcB Also decent cables that will last decades are a good buy, quality doesn't have to mean expensive: https://www.designacable.com/musician-leads/instrument-leads.html/jack-to-jack/designacable-custom-shop-premium-braided-guitar-cable-van-damme-neutrik.html Quote
Paolo85 Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Maybe he would like online resources, but a bit more structured - a paid-for online course. I love this website for online lessons https://members.talkingbass.net/shop/ and they sell gift cards so your son could decide what sort of course he's interested in. Because all these people selling online courses also make free youtube videos, chances are he knows the website already so it may be good to find a way of checking if he loves it or hates it. Quote

fretmeister Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 The little Zoom multi effect would be great fun. I wish there was something like that when I was a kid. 1 Quote
Cato Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Another vote for the Zoom. They're a great and inexpensive entry point into the world of effects pedals, also good enough to gig with. Quote
PaulThePlug Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 (edited) I think the B1on (or B1 Four) would be more useful and flexible than the MS60B for hobby and a learning bass player... No? Edited January 16, 2023 by PaulThePlug 3 Quote
Reggaebass Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 (edited) He would definitely get good use from a tuner pedal , has he got a stand for his bass Edited January 16, 2023 by Reggaebass Quote
TheGreek Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Lots of love for the Zoom pedal. Don't forget it also has a built-in drum machine and tuner. 1 Quote
Nail Soup Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 If he doesn't have a gig bag, that could be a good option. Gig bag or a Zoom-style multi effect would be my top two, with cleaning kit quite a long way behind. Quote

Bunion Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 A cheap audio interface so he can start recording Quote

floFC Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Some good ideas there. I would add a simple looper pedal to the mix - great for quickly recording yourself when inspiration strikes. Quote
