OK, following on from these two threads.......

...and about as tongue in cheek a title as could be given how many of them are out there, and somewhat cheeky given that I haven't even collected my new one (the ne on sale in the first thread above), but I'd love you know who's got one, what models, upsides/downsides (my drummer suggested that it might get rather hot on an outdoor stage for example which initially made me chuckle until I remembered a gig we did in May last year.......), PUPs, amplification, cleaning, storage..........

Specifications to be listed by @Happy Jack when he comes back home - they've changed a bit since he originally got his Ali DB. In the meantime, photos and videos :)

Edit to remind you - click/press on the photos and they will display at full resolution.

Recent videos (I wasn't on sound for any of these, the festivals had their own sound team)

This video allows you to play Spot The Basschatter.

Hint: There are three to be found ... can you find them all, children?

I have to admit that I'm ever so slightly in love with this mongrel of a bass. The tone is WAY better than I expected, quite mellow yet articulate albeit with a rather baked-in low level reverb, courtesy I'd guess of the aircraft hanger-like construction. The first thing I discovered is that if it gets cold it rattles, and when there are around 150 screws into the metal it can be quite an ask to find which of them is causing the problem. The big test of course is how it responds in a room with a drummer and a mic, I'll be reporting back.

One very happy owner, as the seller said, I now have custody, it's a responsibility I intend to take seriously 👍

Just now, Happy Jack said:

Restoration, or leave as is?

Leave as is I think Jack, I really rather like it, it's clearly been on a journey and carries the battle scars and modifications to prove it, although I guess in time I might change my mind. I'm going to experiment with strings - Gamut G and D are going on this evening with incoming Eudoxa for A and E - and of course that can lead to a very special level of madness and expense before I even think about restoration!

So, metal polish ordered, next job is to identify which of the screws is rattling, which I suspect is going to go hand in hand with replacing the old, ugly and rusty flat-head screws with some nice, new and shiny cross head equivalents 👍

Redirecting this thread.

Did the first gig with mine… Went for Golden Slaps and a K&K pickup, and it sounded great. Lots of admiring looks and plenty loud enough for a bit of busking.

I still can’t play much, but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we got paid.

Eudoxa for A and E

Eudoxas on a tin bass?  I guess some pigs deserve ribbons .. if you love those pigs enough.  🙂 🙂

I don't think anything would induce me to buy a metal bass ... but I love this thread.  You're all quite, quite mad ... which makes the world a better place.

I love it. I play it in a 1930s Blues band where it’s keeping up with resonators and the like. It really does command some respect, and the audience loves it.

Given we’re in the entertainment business, I reckon they’re great. Perhaps less so for orchestral gigs!

Probably wouldn’t do for jazz (but I’ve got a Bryant bass for that. So all good!)

Only another 59 gigs and it will have paid itself back!
