Weird octave trick without a pedal

I was down the youtube rabbit hole last night and saw an interview with michael league of snarky puppy.

 

Not my thing by any means, so I dont know why I was watching it, but he was running through his pedal board.

 

He has an octave and an oc3, but also let on about a trick hed learned how to get an octave sound without a pedal.

 

Basically for example, take a G. Fret it at the 3 fret on the e string, but pluck at/over the 15th fret (another g) rather than were youd normally pluck, and you'll get an octave sound.

 

Havent had chance to try it, but he was convinced it works.
