neepheid Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 After they put out the Embassy, I wondered how long it would take them to do the Newport. Well, now they have, short scale lovers. Around £350 gets you a pretty decent modern reinterpretation of the pre '63 Newport. Nice colours too. There's not even a sniff of them on the Epiphone website yet, but they're in retailers now (picture nicked from Peach Guitars, Guitar Guitar have 'em too, probably others) 15 3 Quote
Cosmo Valdemar Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 Now that is nice. The only thing they've got wrong is the tuners but that's an easy fix. Quote
ezbass Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 The Cherry and Pacific Blue (green) ones look tasty. Quote

I hope they're not the same garbage tuners as found on the Embassy, but I suspect they will be, so even if you like the small buttons you'll want to change 'em. Very vague and too much play in them. grayn Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 Nice. Either Pacific Blue or Sunset Yellow for me. Tort scratchplates would look better though. Quote
bertbass Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 Cherry for me but I'd want a left handed one so probably not. Quote
Paul S Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 Interesting spread of weight for the individuals. If I were interested in getting one (which of course I am not. Not even remotely) I would pop along to Peaches (which Google maps tells me would take 55mins currently due to a crash on the A12) (not that I'm interested) and grab a light one. Hellfire and damnation, the last thing I need is a new bass. But, well.... 1 2 Quote
Grahambythesea Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 Not a short scale player personally, but I am pleased to see a reissue of this icon. Not sure I’ve ever seen an original outside of books and photos and whilst the Rivoli was every where in the 60’s I don’t think many of these crossed the pond. Quote
lidl e Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 It's amazing the quailty and variety you can get for sub 500 quid nowadays Quote
Lw. Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 I've gone off short scales recently but those do look pretty nice! I have no idea what the originals looked like so I don't know if they're close or not, feels a bit like the tuners would have looked nicer if they were vintage/clover style though? Quote

I must have a problem because I don't like them on the Harley Bentons that were released recently either! Quote

Unusual for a bass to have a tuner built in, I can'see the need for more than one. What are the machine heads like?🙃 On a serious note, they do look correct for the era of the original. However, I do agree that they probably could be improved upon. Edited January 25, 2023 by Chienmortbb Quote
Jean-Luc Pickguard Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 After buying so many instruments in 2022 that I have run out of places to hide new ones from the missus, I have resolved to buy no new guitars or basses in 2023. That said, now I have seen the cherry newport, I really want one. 2 Quote
bloke_zero Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 Not many mahogany body basses about new like this? I guess CITES: https://cites.org/eng/news/pr/2003/031111_mahogany.shtml Maybe it's not Mahogany but Sapele (often called Mahogany to avoid/promote confusion). Quote
Sibob Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 (edited) Yeah, styling wise, if you want a budget Serek, these look good. But those tuners are all wrong. Why reissue a 'classic' bass with modern looking tuners?! Put elephant ear tuners on them for goodness sake! I'll be sticking with my Midwestern Si Edited January 25, 2023 by Sibob 6 Quote
