Rick Rubin calls Paul McCartney the number one bassist of all time

A valid 'best of all time' list can only appear after time itself has ended. Which is a shame as nobody will have time to write it then.

Of course, the only people who care about who is the "number one bassist" (assuming such a creature exists) are bass players...

Tbh I couldn't care less who's the no1. bassist  ... I can think of a few who are a bit "no2" though.. ;)

We ought to do a BC best of based on 3 or 5 votes per person (I don’t know why I’ve gone for odd numbers). At least that would have some validity for us as a community. Not that it would change anyone’s mind of course, but at least we could point the finger at ourselves when the, “ Who makes these up?” question is asked. :D

Do a thread "who are your top 3 bassists?" And collate the results.

I bet there will be at least one vote for Gary Willis!

HA, ha - Jaco at nr.8 - that RS is absolutely crazy !!!!

Yep, "Jaco" at no. 8 is ridiculous.. He should be knocked back to no. 50 for that awful caterwauling "singing" or whatever its meant to be...

Opinions are like bum-holes...

Not quite.... there is such a thing called imperforate anus where the hole is missing or blocked! So the number of opinions > number of ani.. Judging by the above vid of Tina Weymouth it looks like either she might have one herself or she's celebrating its treatment

There's got to be a death metal band called Imperforate Anus!

And I'll be expecting to see that Tina vid pop up on some antivax nutjob's timeline sometime soon.

The manner of his death was enough to earn him a million accolades.

True, Imperforate Anus only had the best smelling album when singer Ronny Pou exploded on stage.  Cause of death was never published, but rumour has it that he had mainlined Senna pods just before the performnce after smoking them for three weaks continuously.

Ronny Pou was a better bassist than Gary Willis even after he exploded on stage.

On a serious note, some of the Beatles bass lines were very, very simple. Some of the latter ones were much better, but then he did not have to sing them live. Now if you want to tell me he is a better drummer than Ringo, I will ask you outside Sir.

Sorry, i don't think so.

Understandable as Ronnie Pou was a made up name of a bass player in a made up band, purely for the purposes of pointing out that saying bassist a. is better or worse than bassist b. is subjective. You may think Gary Willis is a better bassist than Ronnie Pou, I may think Ronnie Pou is a better bassist than Gary Willis, what we are saying is neither of us is right per se. It is only, at best, a subjective expressed opinion and therefore, in analysis, as utterly pointless as any other unmeasurable unquantifiable opinion.

I know I am going to upset people here but what the heck (not the sausages) I am only here once

Why would the best bass player of all time use the worst bass of all time?

Rumor has had it at that time they all used Fenders in the studio anyway.

Sorry do apologize I have just realized the answer.

The reproduction equipment in those early days was almost as bad as the Hofner bass

About those top lists. The main important thing is who mades them. There could be 25 different lists made by "bass specialists" all around the world and all of them may differ at 99%. Finally we are here to have fun and each have it's 1#bassist, to enjoy listening and learning from, so no sense of those lists.
