Beedster Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Just listening to the radio and Professional Widow came on (yep, Radio 6). Made me chuckle because back in the day that was my 'Hey, I'm the bass player, I'm the guy that's gonna make you wanna dance" line for the sound check, that and Respect Yourself, both licks guaranteed to get a positive reaction from an audience (all three of 'em). Just me or do we al have a little bit of bass magic we throw in to let the audience know that we're there? 1 Quote
SteveXFR Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 The opening riff from Gardenia by Kyuss. Always the first thing I play when I switch the amp on. 2 Quote
Chezz55 Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 The opening riff from Stanley Clarke's "School Days" or Eric Czar's bass riff to Joe Bonamassa's " Had To Cry Today" Quote
Reggaebass Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Always used to like dropping the Rappers Delight Bassline now and again 2 Quote
Waddo Soqable Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Just some cheesy disco thing, or a bit o' Chic 😁 1 Quote

gjones Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 The Sailors Hornpipe. I heard some guy throw it casually into a bass solo once and I said to myself, 'That guy doesn't take himself too seriously but it still sounds cool'. 3 1 Quote
Clarky Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Good times (Rappers Delight) also for me Quote

bassbiscuits Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 I used to chuck the riff from Magnum PI into the occasional bass solo in gigs. 1 Quote
bassbiscuits Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Also quite partial to Rhythm Stick at soundchecks and the intro to Queen “Breakthru” Quote

Jonesy Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 If I'm playing with my heavier band I normally soundcheck with either gun by Soundgarden, bread cheese bow and arrow by future if the left or monkey trick by Jesus lizard. 1 Quote
Maude Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Push It by Salt 'n' Pepa pumping through the PA from a doublebass does the trick. 2 Quote
greentext Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Gratitude by Beastie Boys. MCA was one of the greats, RIP 🤘 3 Quote

Paul S Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 If I am playing somewhere that has a sound guy, and having stood listening to drummer smacking the bejeezus out of his kit for 10 minutes, I usually play Disco Inferno as it is nothing remotely like the music the band plays. But, usually, I only just about finish the run down to the opening verse before the guy says 'OK, that's fine. Drummer, can we just do the snare again....' If it is just the band in a pub I don't bother. 2 Quote
Hobbayne Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Pump it Up by Elvis Costello used to be my sound check party piece. 2 Quote
fretmeister Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 "I'm a bomb" - Natasha Bedingfield. It got enough interest my old band decided to cover it. Or Deeper Underground if I've got a synth pedal with me. Quote
Gasman Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Basslines from Quiet Sun’s “RFD” or “Bargain Classics” are a good workout and sometimes get attention from old Proggers... Quote

Richard R Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Random minor blues scales stuff until my fingers warm up. There's an Irish jig I play at home, which is quite fun, but I can't do that cold so it rarely gets an outing. Quote
