Happy Jack Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 Just watched the first two episodes. Impressive. Very bloody impressive. 1 Quote
WinterMute Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 I don't know, the performances are great, and the story is interesting enough, but I can't help thinking that the original songs composed for the show just aren't very good... Maybe they are going to get better as the show progresses to indicate the growing experience of the band, the song at the end of the 3rd episode isn't bad. That would be quite impressive... I'll probably watch all of it, but Spinal Tap is the only mockumentary I can think of with "decent" songs and they were all pisstakes. Quote
silverfoxnik Posted March 6, 2023 Posted March 6, 2023 I'm really enjoying it! Some of the lead actor's performances are really good... I think the original tunes are OK too. A few cheesy moments so far, but it's difficult to portray musical inspiration and chemistry well in a drama. And what's not to like about a TV show that's about music? The choice of a Patti Smith song as the show's theme song was a surprise, but it's a great song! Looking forward to e.4 already... Quote
Leonard Smalls Posted March 6, 2023 Posted March 6, 2023 I read the book, and thought at the time it was destined to be a film or tv series! Might give it a go, though I found the book slightly annoying in the egomania stakes - I'll bet this doesn't tone it down! and mixing that with 70s style MOR might be pushing it just a little to far for li'l ol' me! I knew I detected his dreary style... 😉 Quote
Cosmo Valdemar Posted March 15, 2023 Posted March 15, 2023 Just watched episode 1... clichéd cheese, glossy but empty. Not quite The Dirt but not too far off. I was expecting more. I still want to see what happens so I'll give the next episode a go - hopefully the shine wears off and things get a bit grittier and uglier. 1 Quote
dieseldalziel Posted March 15, 2023 Posted March 15, 2023 I'm quite enjoying it but Roadies was brilliant I'd re-watch that if I could find it for free.. Quote
Leonard Smalls Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 I watched ep 1 as well... OK, but exactly what you'd expect. I'd have preferred a dramatisation called, say, Iggy and the Stooges. Or perhaps George and The Parliaments. That way you'd be guaranteed grit and out-of-order rather than just Hollywoodisation! Quote

It’s a pastiche stitched together with every cliche under the sun. I am enjoying it despite having more cheese than a fondue. 2 Quote
Bolo Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Not sure what episode I'm on, at one point the bass player shouts "I want to write my own bass lines!" ... and continues to play close to root-fifth 😞 2 Quote

CookPassBabtridge Posted March 18, 2023 Posted March 18, 2023 I've just watched episode 4 and am enjoying it, but as others have said it's very cheesy and the original songs aren't great (I doubt any band would get signed off the back of those 😜) It reminds me a bit of Almost Famous, and I'm enjoying all of the 70s visuals as someone who wasn't around then. 3 Quote

StickyDBRmf Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 We are binge-watching. Aw c'mon the songs sound like Fleetwood Mac. Like all the Stevie/Lindsey prattle all at the same time in one song. Catchy. 1 Quote
StickyDBRmf Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 " I built my own bass!" And when he said he spent his first check on "a couple of amps and a fuzz box" my gf just laughed... Quote
Burns-bass Posted March 20, 2023 Posted March 20, 2023 My wife has read the books and she loves it. Any TV shows that frees me up to play bass is good with me! 1 Quote
pbasspecial Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 I’ve just watched all 8 episodes and thought overall it was pretty good. However, I thought the main singer/songwriter/guitarist was too old, quite unlikeable and a massive control freak. So yes it was pretty spot on! 👍😂 1 2 Quote
