Go to a shop and try some out.

I hadn’t considered that 🙄🥱

If stores had the stock and the selection I would of done that but neither is the case in most cases hence asking

This works for me but I appreciate that its not standard issue.  Two split coils do work really well together though.

I started gassing for a Thunderbird after watching this:

At about 45 seconds in you get a bit of bass not smothered by other instruments.

The bassist in this band is on Talkbass and she said her bass is a Gibson Thunderbird.

I have a Mex Fender P Bass with Fender 63 pick ups, with Adagio Flat wound strings and coupled with Sansamp Tech 21,and ill yell you what, the tone this thing pushes out is spot on imo.

I can get this tone on my PBass especially if using a Dimarzio pup and playing a pick.

  • BassAdder60 changed the title to Suggest a bass.. Let’s stick with the Pbass

The itch has been scratched !!

I like the PBass and it’s simplicity

They are nice to play and ….

Thanks to Dimarzio they now growl very nicely with mids a plenty

I don’t think changing my bass would of resulted in a better outcome

Thank you for the interesting suggestions though, it’s appreciated

This has been my conclusion every time I’ve tried out a different type of bass. I just end up trying to make it sound how I want it to, which is like a PBass.

Great pickup!  I love mine!

I bought one for my bitsa build.

Need to remove baseplate to install. I dont think it will be an issue

Go to a shop somewhere that has quite a lot of basses, try a whole bunch of them, buy the one YOU just like.

I think I may have spotted a flaw or two with this otherwise excellent plan

Ok I really like PBass for rock and I’m always looking at alternatives but don’t know where to start

I tried a Stingray ( Sterling ) and I just didn’t like the sound although for years before I gigged a EB Stingray with my SVT rig and loved it !

So suggest a bass ( circa £1000 max) that is great for rock that isn’t a PBass or a Stingray

Ive never tried a Jazz bass with the band so I’m undecided about that as an option

I'm guessing you want a great bass, not just the typical suggestions.

So...

Reverend Thundergun

One of the best-kept secrets in the bass world.

SPLIT BRICK

Strong lows and highs, open mids. Like a vintage P bass pickup but with more beef, yet retains clarity. 43 gauge wire, ceramic magnet, 8.5K ohms.

THICK BRICK

Warm and thick with strong mids. Output and punch like an active, but more organic sounding. 42 gauge wire, ceramic magnet, 7K ohms.

Had the Epiphone Classic Pro and 60s Thunderbird, very nice, but the Thundergun is just a little bit better, good fret access, and I think it's every bit as good as my two USA-made G&L L2000s.
