To be fair (let's be fair - it allows a retention of the high ground) - it looks like there's a slot for a zero fret, so the nut slots would be deeper and the nut's job is purely and simply as a string guide.

For some reason this thread came to mind when I just saw a Shuker 5 string in the classifieds , £1100 for a gorgeous bass hand built by one of the UKs top luthiers , probably could pick it up within days !!!

I mean, for the money that you were looking to pay, you were only a little ways off of a Shuker, his cheapest builds start at £1700, and you'd be getting it from a builder with a solid rep as well. Well, suppose it'll be interesting to see what happens next.
