I haven't rehearsed for months :( Getting bored with the setlists now.

Have got one lined up for early feb. Going to add a few new songs, inclufing INXS New Sensation which is a bit poppy and outside my usual styles.

Just got home from my last rehearsal. Guitar(lead, rythm and vocal), me(bass), drums(percussions). It was 2nd rehearsal for this new alternative rock project and it seems it was ok.

Meanwhile, in a little rehearsal hall in deepest Gower last night...

Soundman: "Thou hast no top end upon thy bass tone, and your sound distorteth."

Franticsmurf: "But I'm going through my Ampeg pre-amp pedal with the treble boost engaged, using the bridge pick-up on my Sterling HH and I have a clean tone dialed in."

Soundman: "Nevertheless, thy sound is atrocious and offends my ears."

Franticsmurf: "Let me apply my 35 years of experience and wiggle this lead."

There follows the sound of a thousand Welsh dragons roaring and gnashing their teeth, amplified tenfold for all to hear.

Soundman: "Ha! Thy socket hath demons, and they have been purged from thy instrument. Now thy sound is like nectar and ye may be accepted once more into the mix."

A minor niggle of a crackly jack socket and pick-up selector has finally manifested itself as an intermittent problem that will need fixing by someone with better electronics skills than me. My Sterling is off to the doctors. The rest of the rehearsal was great - 1st week back after the New Year and we blew the cobwebs away with a random selection from the back catalogue. As usual with the Hulla band, rehearsals are a mix of frustration (there is a tendency to play a song through and move on without addressing any minor issues), tea (tea is served early on) and a lot of fun (as we don't take ourselves too seriously).

The offending bass and minimalist pedal board.

First rehearsal with a brand new 'Doobie Brothers' tribute show yesterday. Big band with brass section, percussion etc..... sounded immense!

Great musicians and wonderful songs made for a most rewarding day :)

Probably won't be gigging until very late in the year as 2 hours of complicated material to work on and lots of busy musicians to herd together.... but it's very exciting!

Just back from orchestra rehearsal. Some tough stuff this term. Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet overture is very demanding as is the ballet music for Sleeping Beauty. The Prokofiev Romeo and Juliet ballet music takes no prisoners. The cello part goes from bass clef straight to treble, no messing with tenor clef and up to the E a 10th above middle C

Really good rehersal last night. First of the year and good to blow off the cobwebs! I love my current gear. My Dingwall just has so much fundamental, it's almost like the concentrated tone you get from a short scale. My Digbeth just does exactly what I wanted it to do, be bassy and a bit darker sounding plus a bit overdriven with gobs of power.

I've also started programming banks of patches for specific songs on my GX-100, and it's going to be revolutionary for me! No more tap dancing, just selecting the right patch for the bit of the song. I'd assumed that I'd not have enough options per song until I'd started on it, but the GX-100 lets you have a different set of toggles if you press again on the selected bank (CUR NUM option if anyone is interested), so I can arrange things within the banks of 4 patches and then have some optional weirdness should I want it with the CTRL buttons. It also means that I can get rid of bits not being used in specific patches and maybe look at other options to get weird with my sound... I want to try splitting my signal and sending some to a guitar amp for heavy sections or when someone is soloing.

We recorded some quick reference tracks for an upcoming studio session and did a bit of writing too.

Bendricks Rock at the green rooms tonight. First rehearsal after playing seven gigs in quick succession, then nothing dince early November

Two new tunes.

We were surprised how well Hysteria went (well we got through it a few times and all ended together) but a few rough edges to knock off.

New Sensstion, INXS song, was pretty much on point.

We also revived Gasoline (Audioslave).

Practiced some other stuff, some good, some had become a bit ragged, and felt What is and What Should Never Be went really well and shows our potential.

We finished by creating a medley of the Batman theme and Sex Bomb.

Pretty cold rehearsal on Sunday, I had to wear my fleece and warm the strings up between songs. The main atrium at the rehearsal studios (Eiger in Leeds) was toasty warm but the room we were in was freezing. Good rehearsal though. We decided that although Sledgehammer sounds great it's probably too slow for either of our sets, so it's one we might have a go at as a bit of fun in the future. Alright by Supergrass came together pretty quickly, and after only a couple of run throughs we decided that if we can nail it at our next practice in a couple of weeks then it'll be in the set at our first gig of the year on 15th March. We also decided that having a go at Start by The Jam would be on the cards too, although we'll have to figure something out for our keyboardist to do during that other than chipping in with some backing vocals.

Our usual place is booked up the only weekend we can do between now and the gig, so we're going to try the Old Chapel in Holbeck as an alternative. It's cheaper and looks better appointed, so fingers crossed. I'm also looking forward to seeing how ridiculous my Elf head looks on top of the Ashdown 8x10 cabs they supply!

I used to practice in Old Chapel while I was living in Leeds back in 2005-7 - looks like it's been upgraded! I remember there were rugs hanging on every wall and the whole place smelt of stale smoke 😅

We filmed the promo video for our amazing new Doobie Brothers theatre tribute show 'The Doobie Experience' yesterday on the big live stage at KKs Steel Mill, Wolverhampton. It was wonderful to play with so many fantastic singers & musicians and hear ourselves at volume. It's a big band - 9 of us, including 3 piece brass section and percussionist..... lot of harmony vocals and killer grooves/riffs. Bucket list type band/line-up for me.... 💜

Broke out my 'RonnieBarker' Ricky copy and my 1976 Spector SB1 (closest visually I own to a very early Alembic Series I bass) for some kind of authenticity.... ;)

One of my all time favourite bands, saw them live at the first Knebworth Festival in 1974, I’m very envious of you playing wonderful songs from a vast music catalogue. 👍

i'm very jealous! 73-75 is my fave era of them!

They've just announced their UK tour. Are you gonna go see them? They're still one of the best live acts out there...

You can follow our new show on Facebook etc. Would be lovely to see you when we finally get start playing live!

Will definitely catch you! Saw the Doobies at Southampton Guildhall early 74 (first band I saw with pyro) and then at Knebworth later that year. That was with Bill Payne on keys.

Beat the Allmans that day, and were better than Little Feat when I caught up with them. So a lot of love for the Doobie Bros here.

Had a lot of fun mucking about with a mate who was in my last band tonight.  We're looking to get another band of some sort together and played stuff by Therapy?, The Levellers, The Wildhearts and Allison Russel for an hour or two.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and am really keen to get back into action after a long layoff.

Orchestra rehearsal last nigh - Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev. Lots of challenges including treble clef and tricky rhythms. This couple of pages features a lot of tenor clef.

Hysteria, Muse or Def Leppard ?
