tom.android Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 So my mind is wandering back towards owning a traditional looking precision. I used to own a 62RI CIJ and we had a great time together but I think I’m after something a bit different: Wide-ish but shallow-ish satin finish neck Contoured heel Not too expensive £500-£750 s/h No upgrades required to sound great Doesnt have to be a Fender but should look like one Whats out there? Waddo Soqable Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 There's been some cracking P basses for sale on here recently in your price range, I'd have looked no further than that.. 😁 Quote
tom.android Posted March 22, 2023 Author Posted March 22, 2023 Sure, I browse daily. Looking for some tips to help narrow down my search! There’s a lot out there. Quote
tom.android Posted March 22, 2023 Author Posted March 22, 2023 Basically typing out this thread has made me realise that I want the spec of the American Professional II but I want it to be half the price. Ha. Move along, nothing to see here. Quote
Lozz196 Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 Worth checking out the Player range, very nice basses. 2 Quote
Bassassin Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 If this was me I'd buy the parts & put a bitsa together. A Precision is such a simple bass you could spec exactly what you want as far as neck, pickups, hardware, finish etc was concerned & have change. The only thing you might struggle with would be the contoured heel - I'd guess that's not a deal-breaker because as far as I know P players are not allowed up the Dusty End! 5 Quote
MungoBass Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 (edited) I think the Fender Mexican Deluxe series from around 2016 are well worth a look. I’ve had a few of them (!) and they are very nice. Satin necks, contoured heel, PJ pickups and active/passive at the flick of a switch. Should be in your price range too. Edited March 22, 2023 by MungoBass Quote
chris_b Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 Lots of choice, my contribution is to recommend you buy a good set of flatwound strings, my choice would be LaBella or TI, and a lump of foam. 1 Quote

Those MFD pickups are formidable. Re: The heel - I've an SB-2 Tribute, and can easily charge into the dusty end. The cutaways are slightly deeper than a P, so it's less of an issue. Jonesy Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 An SB2 tribute fits most of your requirements, but has a J neck on it. They're cracking basses and those pups are like a P on steroids, so will be pretty different from the 62ri. Quote
neepheid Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 This is why I posited the LB-100 - the most P-bass like bass that G&L produce. The SB-1 and SB-2 are great basses, but they are off into "super P" territory in my eyes. 1 Quote
