Seems they are supposed to go side by side rather than stacked vertically?

Yes, a rare set up indeed, the extension is a passive cab. Cabs are placed side by side 👍

I heard one of these in a huge hotel atrium in the states a couple of years ago. Couldn't believe how fat and space-filling the double bass sounded from such a tiny box 🤩
