Ajoten Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 Struggling to find the sort of teacher I want in the immediate vicinity. Seeing as improving (drastically!) on fretless is one of my goals, I wondered if having lessons with a DB person would work re intonation and practice "management" if they could ignore the bowing element of orchestral playing. Any thoughts or experience thereof? Quote
Linus27 Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 (edited) Not really sure it would be much benefit. Totally different technique playing a double bass compared to a fretless electric bass. An electric fretless bass is no different to a regular bass, you just need good technique, a good ear and practise. Whereabouts are you based? Edited March 31, 2023 by Linus27 1 Quote
Beedster Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 No, it’s like a trombone teacher giving saxophone lessons 😕 1 Quote
TheGreek Posted March 31, 2023 Posted March 31, 2023 I thought about this too - more about the vibrato stuff really. Quote
chyc Posted April 1, 2023 Posted April 1, 2023 To post a contrarian view, as someone who now owns a fretless after starting with playing a double bass, I found double bass lessons were invaluable. The common fingering for DB, where you don't use your third finger, is what I use for electric bass, and it's comfortable and absolutely fine for everything I need to play. However, I will say that I started the same time as someone else who was already an established bass player. He couldn't make the switch. 1 1 Quote

Any thoughts or experience thereof? Totally a great idea! being taught by someone who is dealing with intonation in a way the usual bass guitar isn't is great. I started off as a bass guitarist, but then got on to the double bass, which has in turn helped me with the bass guitar as I've had to be methodical about it all. Hope lessons went well! 1 Quote
