I don't know about others, but in my hands a double bass does not sound like an electric, and the other way around. The same with a fretless. Sometimes I feel like fretted and fretless sound the same, but after recording them, the truth is always revealed.

Once you get up around snare drum levels the sound does get more electric , but it’s still a different thing than an electric bass.  I’ve used a mix of magnetic and piezo pickups , it becomes quite the rabbit hole.

My Rob Allen Mouse can sound as close as you can get to a db, without actually being a db.

It can also sound like a bass guitar.

Get a magnetic pickup.

I did. I used a Schaller magnetic pickup, the chrome one that you screw on the end of the fingerboard. Did the job.

I use synthetic guts now so my bass sports a Shadow bridge pickup instead.

Play through a tube amp that is cranked up.
