Oliver Morgan
Hi, I would like to place a 6.3mm headphone socket under my desk so that I don't have the headphone cable always running across the top of the desk. I've googled around looking for this but have not found anything commercially available. I have seen a few 3D printing projects that have made something similar. I have also thought about making something with an enclosure box from Maplin that I can just screw to the bottom of the desk. Any thoughts or experience with doing something similar? Thanks Oliver
PaulThePlug
Male to Female extension cable... and some adhesive cable clips.
Oliver Morgan
Thanks Paul - I was thinking of something more built in and permanent. This could certainly work in the interim.
SamIAm
Overkill perhaps, but it would do the job. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cubilux-Bidirectional-4-Channel-Headphones-Subwoofer-6-35mm/dp/B0B45MZG1J/ S'manth x
tauzero
A couple of strategically placed cup hooks? M-F extension cable as @PaulThePlug suggests, held in place with a P-clip (eg https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171504770946 or https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/322547600814) or U-clamp (eg https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394456647518). Or, if you can solder, put a couple of stereo jacks into a small Hammond box (1590A) and connect T-T, R-R, S-S, then fix it to the underside of the desk. BigRedX
I'd look for some suitable diameter pipe clamps to hold the in-line socket and screw and hot glue the whole assembly to the underside of the desk.
Matt P
I have actualy made one of these using a 25x25x50mm alu box from ebay and some jack sockets. at work we are asked to only have one earphone in so that we can hear what is going on in the office (reasonable enough for this workplace) so my box has a stereo to mono summing circuit in it (just 3 resistors really) and i used different sized jacks to make it more obvious which way round the box needed to be connected for the summing circuit I think my total outlay was under 8 quid including the box and all the components, and i have it connected via a 3.5mm stereo jack socket to the laptop dock. my box is just blu-taked to the desk under the laptop stand but could have easily been screwed under the desk if i were at home.
WinterMute
I've used the studio spares splitter for the same reasons in a few studios, might be a bit overkill, but multiple headphones outputs is always a benefit. https://www.studiospares.com/mtr-8way-ps-8-headphone-splitter-440520.htm
Oliver Morgan
Thanks everybody for the suggestions. I decided that I will just make one up - easy enough. I ordered the parts and will post an update when done. Cheers.
